Trekstor Vibez, weird HDD-based player
comment: 36 | Monday, August 28 (2006) 10:05AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
It's not exactly super-compact (105 x 50 x 18 mm), but at least Trekstor's upcoming "Vibez" player has the weird looks and a series of slightly-interesting features to show off with.

Apparently, this device will come in both 8 and 15GB flavors, a rather small (176 x 132) TFT color screen, Ogg Vorbis & Flac support as well as DRM9/10 compliance (next to the usual MP3/WMA/WAV offerings).

Also onboard are a picture viewer (for JPEGs), crossfading functionality, playlists-on-the-go and a removable battery that lasts for about 20 hours per charge. An FM tuner card (?) allows us to receive radio waves and there's a wired remote control to activate the Vibez' bleeps and blobs from a distance. An optional docking station is said to be on its way too.

"Rio DJ"-like features and a configurable menu button (assign preferred functionality to a certain button) complement the Vibez as being a strange-looking, but tres interesting device, I guess.

Scheduled release date: November 2006, prices: 199 Euro (8GB) and 229 Euro (15GB, easy choice there).

so with 8 and 15 gig capacities, is it using a microdrive in the 8 giger and an old 1.8er in the 15 giger?

It's not just "not small".. judging by the dimensions, it seems huge for such a mediocre capacity. The screen also looks proportionately tiny to the player itself; this can't be a good thing.

maybe? Who knows.. I havnt heard anything about 15gb 1" drive, as far as I know it caps out at 12gb right?

This looks like it is filled with Rio-tech. Any word on gapless? *rosses fingers*

Edit: I found some more info at Trekstor's homepage, there is a nice big press release in English. Mentions JPEG display of album art, line-in/out/mic recording. Also, in addition to the "FM card" add-on, it says that a "Video-card" is in development and set for a 2007 release.

how do they put 15gb in there? isn't 12gb the limit for 1" hdds? 1.8" hdd?

the featureset looks pretty good. it they didn't mess something up seriously this could be a very interesting player.

if it's anything smaller than 1.8", it'll be groundbreaking. Still, you gotta give credit for it's unique design:

the only other Trekstor DAP I heard of is this little gold and diamond trinket, for a mere $20,000:

I recognize that screen. It's just a color version of the Rio Karma's. The player is even slightly bulky and ugly, just like Karma. Shame about the capacity.

edit: The press release says they've worked with SigmaTel on this.

yeah, didn't notice - the screen really looks very similar to that of the karma, plus colour.

so this might be the st3600 player we've all been waiting for? it surprises me, that trakstor comes up with something like this, usually they are only rebranding more or less cheap players.

i would like to see this become successful. hopefully the design doesn't turn too many people off...

Its refreshing to see something diverge from the norm like this. I loved the Brainiac Egg thing, and I think thats why. Its just so different.

This puppy reeks of gapless, 5-band EQ and a few other things just off the top of my head:

gapless playback
5-band parametric eq (3 custom + 5 presets)
treble/bass mode for those that are so inclined
on-the-fly running playlist
create/edit/delete playlists
powerful bookmarking feature

and after you insert or append a track to the running playlist, I bet there's a feature where if you hold down a button it takes you right back to where you left off in your music library.

...... or am I just dreaming.

I emailed the US distributor, we are getting it "as soon as it ships", which I assume means at the same time as Europe.

I agree with you Saijin, I thought it was ugly too. But the next one will be goooooood...you'll see.

Back on-topic: I hope this isn't the full blown Sigmatel 3600 dap, but it would be just my luck.
