Viliv P2 - videos, details and information!
comment: 20 | Saturday, September 02 (2006) 05:29AM | Posted by Martinp
While Rob is over at the IFA (Internationale Funk Ausstellung) in Berlin, Germany, the rest of us who are stuck at home are trying to find some news for you guys. While visiting Viliv's website I came across some videos of the Viliv P2 in action. They are pretty sweet and show of all the features the P2 has to offer. For example you can also see how the player runs a Windows CE operating system. It obviously incorporates a WLAN module, because they go off surfing the internets with IE.

The Viliv P2 also incorporates a GPS and a DMB module and should be nearing its release date any time soon. I recently reviewed the Viliv P1 and wasn’t too convinced of the whole interface. The touch screen does look a whole load nicer though, but the video hasn't won me over 100%. In my opinion they need to hire a few good firmware programmers and graphics designers, seeing that their hardware in general is pretty solid.

I am currently working on uploading all the Videos to YouTube for easier viewing, but you can also check out Viliv’s website. I have uploaded the first video - here it is:

Video Part 2 - Flash Support
Video Part 3 - Dictionary I
Video Part 4 - File Viewer I
Video Part 5 - Dictionary II
Video Part 6 - File Viewer II
Video Part 7 - Linux QTopia PDA
Video Part 8 - T-DMB Demo
Video Part 9 - WinCE/Linux Multi-Booting
Video Part 10 - T-DMB on Car Navigation I (too long for YouTube)
Video Part 11 - T-DMB on Car Navigation II (too long for YouTube)

This is the closest thing to a PDA with a hard drive i've seen. But the PDA's real strength is third party software; if this thing is significantly harder or impossible to develop for, or to port PDA apps to, it won't repalce a PDA as the most versatile gadget in my book. Maybe it's not meant to, but I wouldn't be able to justify the cost if it couldn't.

Like the features; red-on-black with blue Windows CE needs fixing.

I dunno, but when I see the "Windows" logo on a device, I think "no thank you" and move on. Am I alone in this reaction?

I like the design of this PMP but that's about it.

The GUI looks boring as hell. The now playing screen for music looks like a stock skin for WMP. Still no album art. That Windows CE OS looks so ancient. I don't know if that's the latest mobile CE OS out right now, but man it's really dated. I think Viliv has potential but they still need to work on polishing up their interfaces.

I think it's quite great actually! name one more pmp with this many features...? Windows CE gives it a load of features. Internet on your pmp is cool too i think. GUI looks dull indeed, windows CE can be changed a little but the normal GUI probrobably not...

Uhm, I should have mentioned that you can either boot Linox or Windows CE. This was a test to see how smart our readers are and if they would follow the links we give them. Obviously no one did ... Anyways . I am still uploading the videos to youtube and you can all watch them there then.

i didn't follow the links, not because of how smart i am/am not, martin, but because i have absolutely minimum interest in this device.

I've been following the Viliv P2 for quite sometime. It's not a bad lineup :Wifi, PDF, MS Office and hopefully a cleaned up Flash 2.0 with games and all. Im sure those Linux fans out there can tinker and tweak this thing till there hearts contempt. I'm overall impressed with the capabilities and features. According to a repy email, this thing should be out end of this month. For me, its either the P2 or the Archos 604 Wifi. (can't see myself waiting 6 months)

Viliv is now answering back on email, they said end of this month it should be available. I have my doubts knowing how the Koreans do things. I hope they come true on their word.

Oh yea, I agree the GUI and CE OS do look bland, but come on, its pre production factory settings. One of the demo vids touches up on some different skins and themes. For the MS, man slap on a desktop background and you'll be cookin in crisco. We all know the P1 sucked, but give em a chance on the P2 and see if they did there homework.

I am still scared that they will leave all the GUI like it is. I also think it is a very bad move of them to have both Windows CE and Linux. They can't exclusvly concentrate on any of the two and their Firmware team is more than slack as far as I have seen.

Still upping vids - sorry for the long delays, but they are quite massive.

I feel that this will never reach America. It has features like dmb and navigation which are not compatible there. But that's just what I think. It looks pretty nice though. I'll just have to go play around with the real thing.

Firmware team? That is acutally would have to do more with when linux release the next kernal updates, or when ms brings out another updated. Unless they are uisng a optimized version of CE for their own device. And by the looks of things it is useing CE 5.0(or is it called .net can't remember). And this is different than WM5.0 you see on pda and smart phones. This is more windows like.
