Archos 504 is here, stores more videos than ever
comment: 29 | Wednesday, September 27 (2006) 10:04AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
In case you're not familiar with the latest addition to the "4th generation" of Archos players, here's a little update for all of you. We've mentioned the 504 briefly before, but a little hindsight never hurt anybody.

We've seen the 404 & 604 product pages pop up a while ago; now, Archos' "middle man" stands up to enter the arena. The 504 model goes on where the Gmini-500 left off: 80GB worth of storage capacity. If you're in dire need of more space, well, that's no problem: there's also a 160GB version of the 504. Wow. That's the stuff video-collecting junkies have been waiting for, I guess.

No fancy WiFi stuff in here, and the 504 is less slender than its older brother (130 x 78 x 23 mm, 315 gram for the 504 vs. 130 x 78 x 17 mm, 255 gram for the 604). When looking at absolute figures, the 504 is noticeably more expensive than the 604. The 80GB version goes at 499 Euro (MSRP), whereas the double-whammy 160-gigger costs a whopping 699 Euro; a 30GB 604 requires us to drop some 379 Euro onto the retailer's counter.

In return you'll get lots and lots of additional disk space, of course. There's still the option to record video through the video dock (needs to be bought seperately - that's another 99 Euro or so) and the basic components are identical to that of the sophisticated 604-series (as in, it has a very nice screen and a sturdy exterior, there's USB-Host in there, it's UMS/MTP compliant, supports AC3, has a removable battery et cetera). Battery life is a tiny bit better too, compared to the 604's 16 hours for audio (504: 17 hours) and 5 hours for video (504: 5.5 hours).

So there you have it. Archos' Generation 4. Now if they'd only introduce a 160GB successor to the the XS202(s)... .

I don't know how many people know about this fact, but all the new 4th generation ARCHOS PMP's (404, 504, 604) have

TRUE GAPLESS PLAYBACK !!!!!!

since 22th of Septmenber (due to firmware update).

Btw, I already informed ssjmichael about this over one week ago so he would post it in the news-section here, but no response so far!?

All it needs now is wifi, a video camera, and line-in video recording

I like Robert Sinke's idea for a 160GB XS202.

PMP's are great for killing time on public transportation, but I drive a car and don't have any use for portable video. I need something as small as possible that will hold my entire 50GB mp3 collection, is mass storage compliant, has on-the-fly playlists, and navigates by tags.

a 80gb gmini400 with a 3" screen, more codec support, sleep mode, gapless, and i would be very very happy...plus a DVR in built like A2 etc

Hey nocomp, I'm still waiting for verification of that true gapless playback claim. One of the regulars at the new riovolution.org put his updated 5G iPod to the gapless test and it performed very nicely. Better than I expected anyway.

If anyone has this and can confirm, my favorite test sample is "Chump" -> "Longview" on Dookie.

Thanks.

Nocomp, I believe he means actual verifications from an owner of one of the Archos devices.

We briefly mentioned here when the 404's firmware was updated with gapless playback, but so far I don't believe we've got any confirmation.

Well, it's only second or third handy information, but a friend told me he tried gapless playback on his 404 and it worked perfectly.

I'm looking for perfect gapless in the most anal sense of the term. For example, the Karma plays FLAC and OGG gapless with absolute perfection. With mp3, Karma clips a microsecond from the last frame of the first track in a gapless transition.

iPod gapless handles both AAC and MP3 gapless perfectly as far as I can tell.

LOL well video is it's main priority, not audio. Although it won't hurt to add FLAC, OGG, etc. and some of it's competition already does... plus it's free to use too...

Personally, I think it's quite expensive, even for its capacity.

Well 80GB for 379 euros is okay, most PMPs only go up to 30 GB...

Only thing is, it's 499 Euro rather than 379 Euro... use your reading skills, young apprentice Jedi.

379 Euro is the 30GB 604. Big, big difference.

Also keep in mind that Archos' MSRPs can be quite... high... compared to prices at the actual retailer itself. It's a "manufacturer suggested" price, not a strict rule or anything.

I've seen the 504 being offered (on pre-order basis) at around 400 & 600 Euro for the 80 & 160GB versions respectively. One would be mad to order it directly from Archos if those prices are right.

Also seems that there's going to be a 40-gigger, priced around 320-350 Euro in the shops.
