iriver Clix is back in black w/ 4 GB
comment: 39 | Thursday, October 12 (2006) 03:05PM | Posted by Lone

There was a rumor blowing in the wind about iriver upgrading their Clix player with a new color and capacity, and it seems to be true. Swedish tech site Min Hembio managed to obtain a trio of what are clearly professional product shots of the new Clix in its black shell.

So yeah, we're still not sure of the availablilty or release date of the new Clix, but we're sure it looks quite classy.

I personally like the 2GB Clix design better as it contrasted the black front, but this one doesn't look that bad as well. iRiver is a bit behind in terms of capacity, when will we see a 6 or 8GB Clix? In order to compete with it's competitors it should have at least what the competition is offering.

someone at MisticRiver must be able to speak Norwegian because he said it will ship with Audible support. Also it would be available at the end of this month for 2,499.00 SEK which equals about 338.99 USD though since it is Europe that is an exaggerated price for North America. (if it does ship to us)

I'd just like to say I am disappointed that iriver made the front glossy, but not the back. Gloss only has negatives like smudging, easier to scratch, harder to use in the sun (have to turn the brightness up to be semi-usable), and lowers the color accuracy.

Great! I'm in the process of selling two iPods just in time ... I was either going with the 2GB Clix or the Sansa Rhapsody (leaning towards Clix because of interface, SQ and price). I may not hold out, though, to wait for the 4GB plus I have a feeling it might be really expensive, at least initially. Great that they are upping the capacity, though ... finally! Pam

AWESOME!

I think the black looks great. Though I must detach from Breakdown's assessment of glossy on two points--I feel that certain glossy surfaces (as demonstrated by the Zen V) are resistant to scratching, and certain types of glossiness improve color depth and vibrance. Though I do agree on smudging and the scratching of the majority of glossy faces.

Actually some glossy screen improve image quality... that's why some laptops use glossy screens for multimedia laptops...

But to an extent, smudging, fingerprints and scratching are usually side effects LOL But the Clix looks great either way and it adds to it's design IMO.

I'm pretty sure the screen part of a dap would have to be glossy.

It's great that it has 4gb now, but it makes it harder for me to decide between this and the meizu m6 miniplayer. but i heard that the miniplayer is also upping the capacity. so i will still be waiting for it.

okay so if gloss really does improve the color then I wont be so hard on it in the future.

Tom's Hardware actually argues that glossy screens do not improve quality. Based on my experience with glossy screen laptop, I'd tend to agree - in actual usage, the colors look just the same. In display showrooms they do look a bit better though.

Still, a 8gb Clix would be sweet. 4GB is still kind - say, not quite enough?

It's definitely a good move. I think 4GB is still more than enough for the mainstream conumer looking for just a flash player. The move to 8GB is just happening so now many people (aside from us enthusiasts) have a true desire for that yet. I definitely want to see them come out with higher capacities. I'd even accept a HD version of the clix with a 4" screen. That'd be sweet.

Well it is better than 2 gigs right? Most likely 199.99 for Americans (hence the price drop of the 2 gig clix)

LOL well since the iPod now goes to 8GBs many "average joe" consumers may view that as a standard so that's why i think 8GBs should be implemented as well...

Wondering whether they could get a competitive price for 8gb though. I would expect the 4GB to be $200 in the U.S. Especially if you watch this video.

[Linky]

They say about half way in there that $200 and under is their ideal price range.

If you go much higher you start competing with hard drive players anyways. Tough sell.

I don't think that 8GB flash should be considered a standard now just because 2 flash DAP's have it, and a third is going to have it in the near future.....considering all the hundreds of flash DAP's out there.

8GB, even 6GB, is the high-end of the flash market.......4GB flash is a good middle ground right now, and I think the minimum storage size for any flash DAP that supports video playback, and has top-line color video screens.

once 2 or 3 more flash DAP's start showing up with 8GB's, then we can start considering 8GB to be a nominal capacity......

when are those bastards at sumsung gonna stop bleeding us dry, and just release a 32 Gig flash player. THEY CAN DO IT, they just want to create artificial advancement, so we'll be forced to upgrade.

If a 32 Gig flash player came along, I wouldn't need to upgrade at all.

Sony is using 16gb flash as an option in the UX series devices. They can maybe use that in their mp3 player.

6GB or 8GB of flash is prohibitively expensive for most companies unless they struck a deal (Apple and Samsung IIRC) or manufacture their own memory (Sandisk).

timmins, here is an article over at Daily Tech about new laptops using 16GB abd 32GB flash harddrives. They add $700 and $1400 respectively to the normal price of the laptop. [Linky] Be sure to check out the video link at the end of the news items. It compares the boot time of a SSD to a regular hard drive. Very nice. !amazed

Sure someone could manufacture one, but who is going to purchase a >$1500 DAP? You.... No, I didn't think so. They will come when the price finally drops to a reasonable level. One year, two years... who knows? In the bigger scheme of things it won't be too long.

whats the point make it more bigger size if they play choppy framerate ? it does play 15fps right ?

The rip-off version of Clix somehow offer at least 30fps for smooth playback.. ..made from ipod city

Well once 64gb and larger come out in 2007 as rumored then we may see prices for 12gigs, and 16gigs go down. And that is when I might buy but, I have 14gigs of music alone and I still haven't loaded a few CD and there is more coming out so I need at least 32 to be happy. Then I may look into an black iRiver clicks for purchase.

I would never buy a newer clix from iriver if they ever did make one that went above 8GB flash. Anything above that and it isn't great for navigation.

encore 15fps is not choppy. It is as smooth as television. But there is a bigger problem than that and there are columns that go across the screen when playing which I think is a side effect of the 15fps.

That does seem to be the unfortunate truth, but I wonder how Creative came out with that 8GB flash player?

@sdsdv10, fair enough maybe I'm being a lttle optimistic. I guess I'm just jaded by these companies thanks to their price fixing effort from 99-02.

uuhm... Breakdown,
Clix has great features, but most PMP mean for video playback, should it be play with nice quality, at the right bitrate & resolution ?

Most of my collective vids is 24/29fps, 15fps video is very noticeable.

On a 2.2" screen the difference is hardly noticeable. I wsa doubtful too, till I actuallly played some videos on the player. The videos I showed don't really do the playback quality justice.

well even though it's only 2 DAPs with 8GBs it soon should be a industry standard but i'm not demanding it... i just think they should at least be considering it.

While 32GB flash is possible and has been implemented in about 3 laptop there is about a $700 premium for them right now and this is WAY over budget for anyone looking for a DAP...

oh.. and the Sony UX series is offering 32GB of flash as well...

coorection, supposedly there is a $1400 premium on 32 Gigs, 700 for 16.
