iriver S10 pics, and lots of them
comment: 46 | Saturday, October 14 (2006) 10:01AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Can't get enough of that crazy-small iriver S10? Well, in addition to previously-shown pics and galleries, MPnavi went and took quite a few photographs of this little feller. Enjoy, or don't.

Unwrapping and such

Next to Samsung's T9.

Next to the iPod nano.

We believe it's safe to say that the S10 is pretty small indeed. Might want to tape/glue/staple/pierce it to your body, for it seems like one could lose this thingy quite easily. Alternatively, you could use the bundled necklace... less exciting than the stapling, though.

You could use a solder iron to melt the Shuffle to the back of the S10. Then you'd have that nice clip and wouldn't have to fool with the blind navigation.

^ Haha, what he said....Steve?!!?

there should be a side by side comparison shot between the S10 and the Zen V.......hard to get a good comprehension of the size differences with the Nano....it's like comparing the earth beside the the sun............

then why would you want to compare the earth to something double the size of the sun? (nano 90x40x6.5mm = 23,400mm³ zen v 43.5x67.5x15.9mm = 46,686mm³)

ps. when they make an mp3 player that is 0.018mm³, let me know

This device looks so cool... I'll be able to check it out next Summer. I still think iriver isn't making the right moves. I'm hoping they'll suprise us with something amazing.

the nano is just too big for a good comparison, zip. That's why I used the earth-sun analogy. When the earth is placed alongside the sun, the sun is so big by comparison, you can't even tell anymore that the sun is circular......it's side appears completely flat, next to the earth.....

just like the Nano's side........

seriously, I was referring to the size in terms of width+length, since the photographic image above is 2-dimensional, not 3-dimensional. The Nano is twice as long as the S10, and 1.333 longer than the zen V. You'll need a far deeper pocket to stick the Nano into, to keep it's screen from sticking out, regardless of how thick the damn thing is....

unless you fold the Nano in two.

LOL well also you should compare to screen size to overall size ratio... there's so much blank space on the Nano...

But anyways... this DAPs looks so cool, but still too small, but i bet it's going to be a great competitor to the MobiBLU Cube 2.

if you're pockets were shorter than 3.5 inches, you wouldn't be able to fit a pen, a candybar style phone, or a typical bi-fold wallet.

I would, but I'd have to keep clinging to my iPod Nano instead - if I had one - since I wouldn't have a pocket big enough to put it in.....

see, look here: the Nano is so massive (2-dimensionally speaking), it can't even fit entirely in the photo, while the miniscule S10 takes up only a fraction of the photo:

hey it doesn't have that routing on the screen that the clix has (which chips away) but it also looks like it has the clear-coat glazzed on it which (from the photos) that iPod doesn't have. iriver should have been able to pick up on that...

No offense, but what kind of pants are you wearing that has pockets less than 4 inches long? I have never seen anyone with their ipod nano sticking out of their pockets because the nano was too long. Unless it was some sort of fashion style, why even bother buying pants with pockets so short that you can't even fit your own hands in?

well, how about the little coin pocket on the Red Tab Levis jeans? I've never seen anyone put their hands in the coin pocket of their levis before. But isn't that the pocket that Steve Jobs pulls the iPod Nano out of when he introduces it to the masses??

[Linky]

I always wondered about that pocket......my coin pocket on my Red Tab Levi's measures about 3.4" from the edge of the pocket hem to the v-point - did you know that the coin pockets have a v-point? - stitch at it's bottom. And that's with nothing in the pocket.....

So considering that any object that's thicker than a piece of paper, and has a flat bottom instead of a v-point bottom, is not going to sit entirely in the v-point at the bottom of the coin pocket, how does Jobs' 3.5" long Nano sit entirely covered in his coin pocket, like in the video? Especially since the Nano sticks out at least 0.2-0.3" out of my coin pocket?

Yea, he must have, but he said the Nano is for that pocket in everyone's jeans. If everyone's jeans have pockets like mine you can't put the Nano in it without it sticking out. The whole focus of the presentation, and all the ooh's and ahhh's, were based on it being completely concealed in that pocket. It was a big fat lie, and Steve Jobs is a liar.

Now we're shifting to coin pockets all of a sudden? You know, you don't exactly have to place the nano there because Steve Jobs said so in his presentation. If your coin pocket wasn't long enough in the first place, I doubt it would be thick enough to accomodate a player .4 inches thick without a little struggle but what do I know.

Three, to an extent I think that is what they are doing. A few weeks ago I watched a video with the president of iriver North America. He's comments inferred that Clix would be made into a brand like the iPod (and like the Zune is trying to do) with a full line of Clix based players. The S10 is the small flash based Shuffle type, the Clix competes with the Nano and I wouldn't be surprised if they come out with a larger HD based unit to compete with the 5.5g iPod.

The point is, he made a big deal of it fitting in that pocket, but it's looking like it was a rigged demonstration. You'd get more honesty out of a handful of pond scum than you would out of Steve Jobs.

Not to rain on everyone's sh*t parade (I'm as much a fan of them as anyone...), but I just sank a ruler into the coin pocket of my non-Levis pair of jeans (Rustler's the brand), and hit 4 inches. So it's at least possible without sneakier-than-scum customization tactics.

Anyways, didn't we already know Steve Jobs has deep pockets?

Levi's Red Tab's have been standard for decades, haven't they......I mean, think about it: coin pockets are not intended for your entire hand to go into, right?? And they are intended to place your spare change in (although I've gone through many of my jeans and never used the coin pockets)....

My Levi's coin pocket measures just under 2.9" wide at the opening, from rivet to rivet. That gets my three predominant fingers into it (minus my pinky) without stretching the pocket out or hurting my hand, and well shy of my knuckles....

Now pick up something 3.5" long, such as your iPod Nano (if you have one) or my Sandisk e280. Try to place the object at the inside knuckle of your middle finger (should be your longest finger) above your palm (where your calouses are - unless you're a wuss!).

See if your fingertip reaches above the end of that object. Unless you have very long fingers, yours probably won't go beyond that object, if it even reaches the end of it (my just does).

A coin pocket that doesn't allow for your whole hand to go into past your knuckles, and is deeper than the average adult males' fingers, is not going to be well designed as it will be a pain to fish your change out of, since it's not wide enough to use your thumb. I'd be surprised if any jeans coin pockets are as deep as 4"......

In my experience, though, every coin pocket is a pain to use; they're a great place to know where your change is, but not to get it back again.
