Archos 404/504 now playing H.264/AAC
comment: 18 | Friday, October 27 (2006) 06:49PM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
Archos recently introduced a new line of portable media players, including the 404 (30gb), 504 (40gb and 80gb), and 604 (30gb). All three models are currently available through the web, and we've seen the 504 at some B&M retailers like CompUSA and Target. A 160gb version of the 504 is supposed to show up pretty soon, and a WiFi-enabled version of the 604 is coming later.

They all share a shiney new design but we were disappointed to find that codec support was still limited to MP3, WMA, and WAV audio along with WMV and MPEG-4 SP videos. Same as their last model, the AV500. The basics are there but we want more choices these days, modern codecs like OGG, FLAC, AAC, H.264, and AC3.

Archos did pledge to support some of these formats through downloadable plug-ins (software), to be made available at some point in the future. However, there was a catch: upgrades would have to be purchased separately.

As much as that sucks, at least they delivered. The first plug-in was posted this week. At Archos.com you buy the Video Podcast plug-in which adds support for H.264 video and AAC audio in .mp4, .m4v, and .mov containers. A firmware update is required, and there's new firmware version available for all 3 models.

The price? 20 Euro ($25 USD). Ouch. While some of that surely goes to licensing costs, we're guessing that a good chunk of it goes right into their pockets. Of course, you certainly don't have to buy it.

A second upgrade in still in the works, the Cinema plug-in. This one will add support for MPEG-2 and AC3 in .vob, .mpg and .ps (?) containers.

they have the 404 at my local CompUSA too, just thought I'd let you all know. And I'm in Idaho, so it's not like it'd slip in by accident.

This is why I still love my A2 LOL no plug-ins needed... but it guess this was to lower the cost of the unit and for people to just buy the features they need.

Basically it's a rip off and they are not even mentionning Xvid or Divx.

A pitty because I liked their players despite already owning a ZVM (which only miss AC3 btw).

Xvid and Divx are implementations of MPEG-4 SP. in other words, compatible.

Yep xvid/divx play perfectly fine already on the 404

Kind of pricey, but it's good to have support considering 2 popular portable devices play that kind of video (PSP & iPod), and the Zune, which will probably be pretty popular will also. I think any PMP I buy would have to support this, but I'm waiting to see what Cowon does before I go for one of these Archos players.

I have no problems with this setup as my music is in mp3 and my movies in xvid, so overall I don't end up paying for what I don't want, keeping the overall cost down. It will be interesting to see if the A3 can match the 504/604 in price as well as include some of the more "modern" codecs mentioned in the article above . But that's just me

This product is a rip off. Everthing is optional. I cannot believe that they didn't include an AV cable, AC adapter and these codecs. What a retarded idea. Sure, they make money, but in terms of the consumer, it creates a mess.

I don't think the idea is all that bad, not everyone needs everything, some might just want what it offers out of the box, but given that they have so many optional things to buy, they should have lowered the price of the player itself. Right now they're still selling the 604 for $350 (you can find it for less though), they should be able to at least match Creative's $299 for the W with all of this other stuff being sold seperately, at $350 I think more should be included.

Ummm ... the 160GB 504 has also been out for some weeks, at least in Canada and Europe. There are user reports at archosfans.com (English) and jbmm.fr (French).

There's more to the world than the US, strange as it may sound!

If a few extra dollars will drive additional codec support, then why not? I agree with AceOfClubs and HHS on this. Smaller companies need to amortize their development costs somehow, seems perfectly fair IMO.

as the saying goes..." I don't know what I want, but I want it now!"

So for 40 bucks more you can play h264 and mpeg2 with ac3... Why didn't they just implement these codecs in the first place? If you can afford a player thats 350 dollars whats 40 bucks extra?

PS. is there way to buy plug-ins without a credit card?

The A2 plays AAC? H.264? WOW.

I prefer it this way, at least I can pick and choose my codecs.
