New Cowon D2 - quite feature packed
comment: 41 | Saturday, October 28 (2006) 11:20AM | Posted by Lone
Those of us who were just a bit disappointed in Cowon's recent D1 announcement may be more pleased with what else the Korean company has cooked up. Their player is called the D2, and it's design is a bit different than most of Cowon's products.

Let's just start things off with a (new) picture:

...and how about some specifications?

  • 2.5 inch LCD (320 x 240)
  • Playback 45 hours (MP3), DMB 8 hours.
  • Built-in DMB (For Korean market)
  • SD Card slot for SD&MMC
  • Supports various files WMV9, MPEG4 (Movie), MP3, Ogg, WMA, FLAC (Music)
  • 94mW output (47mW+47mw)
  • 30 frame QVGA movie playback and TV-Out support
  • Touch interface by transparent overlay GUI.
  • FM Radio, Radio record, Vocie/Line-in Record
  • Will be released in Korea by middle of Nov.
  • Price not yet announced.

Cowon's claim to fame in the DAP world is feature-packed devices, and the D2 appears to be no exception, with DMB, FM radio, video playback, TV outpout, touchscreen, an expansion slot, and insane audio battery life. For reference, the D2's screen size and resolution are the same as the Meizu M6, though it's 16 million colors are far more than the Meizu's 260,000. The source shows a 2 GB version; hopefully higher capacity models are on the way.

Thanks, -monsterplay-

Update: the above-mentioned release date of November is valid for South Korea. Should be available abroad before Christmas, if all goes well - a 4GB edition is "possible" but has yet to be confirmed. Cowon will strip off the DMB stuff for the US/EU versions as well, as was to be expected. Specs listed above are the official ones. Seems that there is a black and a white version of the D2 out there.

Couple of additional pictures after the jump (just click the link below). By the way, you might remember our previous item on the iAudio D1 (iAudio 6 + DAB and flash memory) - this has been confirmed to hold 4GB worth of memory (still flash, we hope) rather than the formerly-mentioned 1 & 2GB values. MSRP has dropped dramatically as well, to 159UKP (down from 179UKP in initial reports).

Thanks, Kevin & Josh

this pic ins't best among others...also, its not a PMP. Should be compare with Nano kinds of models.

2GB fixed but 4GB can be released. if you add 4GB SD card..it means 8GB...fair enough I guess...

Good Job COWON. :p

Ohh, close to the mark - very close! Nice job Cowon. It looks a little generic and unbalanced with the lettering on the side, but it probably looks better in person. But good feature set! Very, very good.

I own a archos av500 60gb. When i'am on a trip, this is good because it's very portable! It has a sd-slot, but with a 6 or 8 flash memory it's better for me. 8 or 11 movies. The archos will be plugged-in my tv and stereo for ever with his player.

That's pretty insane. I mean 45 hours of MP3 playback, with a 30fps screen that's touch-based to boot?

I'm seriously nervously wondering if the battery is lithium-ion or AA/AAA.. 45 hours of playback through lithium-ion rechargeables seems unheard of for a player with those kinds of specs.

it looks fairly thick, perhaps it is due to a large capacity battery?

And the dmb antenna is now the cord of the earphones. Just like all the radio enabled players. And coming out next month. Seems pretty sweet!

Pretty beasty player but I don't see why it needs 16 million colours on a screen so small (and isn't the M6 only 2.4"?) and touchscreen seems a bit overboard for the size as well, but at least we can say that Apple weren't first to market with it
45 hours though...not bad, not bad.

Still waiting to see what the M6 Deluxe has to offer.

it would probably be cheaper for cowon to put 8gb in there in the first place than for you to buy 8gb in sd and add it yourself. so it's no advantage to settle for lower gb just because there is an sd slot and you have to pay more (for the slot mechanism, sd card). point is, it would be cheapest if cowon used 8gb and jacked up the price, but then there might be more criticism for the more obvious but cheaper upfront price.

I've read about other players with memory slots that the players are limited in the size of the card that they can read. Do we know if this player can even utilize an 8 gig card?

fair point X i guess we'll have to wait and see, but this is cowon and i doubt they would limit it

SD cards are limited to 4GB. To get greater than 4GB, you need to use the newer SDHC cards, which are not backward compatible with SD (although they do have the same or similar form factor). For more info, see this quote from the SanDisk website.

What is SDHC?
To support the higher capacity needs, SD cards are now requiring a different design. The new SD 2.0 specifications - which supports 4GB and up - is called Secure Digital High Capacity(SDHC). The SD Association has created and defined 3 speed classes to help you identify speed and performance capabilities/minimum requirements of SDHC cards and their SDHC host products. Details on the SD 2.0 specification: [Linky] or SanDisk.com/SDHC

SDHC Compatibility Information
Because SDHC works differently (supports the new higher capacity cards) this new card format is not backwards compatible with legacy SD format host devices.
