Archos 104 in 6 GB and (soon) 8 GB flavors
comment: 14 | Wednesday, November 01 (2006) 10:32AM | Posted by Lone
We're not sure precisely how long it's been out, but there's a 6 GB version of Archos' 104 microdrive DAP, (which originally held 4 GB) available at numerous webshops. In addition, placeholder pages for 104's with 8 GB drives have appeared, meaning they can't be too far off.

This news begs the question: with a few flash-based players hitting the 8 GB number recently, does anyone actually consider purchasing a DAP with a microdrive if its storage maxes out at "only" 8 GB's? Would it take a higher number (maybe 12 or 15 GB's) for you to choose a microdrive player over a flash one? Hmm, perhaps we have the next poll idea in line

I donno... I kinda like how small the 104 is... If it was 12-15gb it would be great! It would be a segment of the market all its own.

As I see it Archos has two choices, either price or capacity. They have to significantly undercut the 8GB flash price or install larger drives. I don't hold out much hope for either...

I agree, sdsdv10. Then again, if we're talking about the Trekstor Vibez, I might be persuaded to contradict myself...

only reason to buy a 8gb micro drive is if you can't afford an 8gb flash...

I will not be excited about Archos until they come out with a Super202.

C'mon Archos, i'm waiting. ..tap...tap...tap...

I'm guessing the question posed is directed squarely at Trekstor and the upcoming Vibez.

It would take an overwhelming feature set for me to seriously consider buying an 8 GB or 12 GB microdrive player. But the Trekstor Vibez may just be the one. What makes it easier for me to consider is the realization that the Vibez is not a Karma replacement, rather it's a Carbon Pearl replacement.

But the microdrive vs. flash question still stands. At 12 GB I'm wavering. 15 GB makes it a little easier of a choice. 20 GB or larger would make it a no-brainer.

Sorry for the hijack, but i'm wondering if the trekstor will be compact flash compatible, because I think 32GB GF isn't too far off. It would be nice to be able to drop 32gigs in there in a year or so.

This is retarded. It sucked ever since it was first introduced and still does. Come on Archos, trash this player.

Steve, if the Vibez hardware is similar enough to the Rio Pearl (and that's a huge "if"), this may be do-able. There's a 10-page thread about this on the old Riovolution.com forums about it here [Linky]

In the very last post, someone named "vroomfondel2" says he got CF to work "flawlessly" in his Pearl.

peter still drops in on the old board and the new Riovolution.org board. He might have an idea if this would work on the Vibez or not.

The 104's main advantage, is that it is considerably less expensive than flash based mp3 players at the same capacity.

Charbax, could you please provide links? A search on Amazon.com provided results the exact opposite of what you just stated.

The Archos 104 6GB HDD DAP is $180 --> [Linky]

The Sansa e280 8GB flash DAP is also $180 --> [Linky]

More capacity at the same price for flash over Archos HDD unit. What's up with that.

I own an Archos PocketDish Av402e so I'm not anti-Archos, but your Archos fanboy stuff posted all over the web is often complete nonsense. Please stick to the facts.
