Upgrade your Zune's hard drive (up to 80 GB)
comment: 28 | Friday, November 24 (2006) 10:30AM | Posted by Lone

Although many were disappointed that Microsoft's Zune is currently only available with 30 GB of storage, it may be of some consolation that you can replace the Zune's hard drive yourself with a little cash and a little elbow grease.

The guys at iPodMods.com apparently don't mind the Zune: they've offered a little guide to cracking it open to replace the battery and/or hard drive with one of Toshiba's new ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) drives, which are currently available in storage capacities up to 80 GB. It looks like the work required is similar to when opening up an iPod, for better or worse.

I've heard that you can only close the case back with a 40gb drive, with 80gb it's to full.

right... cuz 20-30-40gb drives are ~6mm thick while the 60-80gb drives are typically ~3mm thicker to accommodate 2 platters. you won't find 3mm of empty space inside any modern dap.

If you read through Lone's link, you do it by not useing the Zune drive cage.

But the cost of the new drive is about the same as the cost of the original Zune. If you buy two Zunes you've got sort of a RAID thing going.

it is expensive plus the risk of breaking something sending the zune to the trash....it is much cheaper to buy an 80GB ipod or the Archos 504

this is a more useful thing to know about after your Zune's 90-day warranty has expired, or you have filled up the capacity.....

then, all bets are off!

Yeah but if you don't want an iPod or a 504, it might be worth it... if you're the modding type ofcourse.

i guess so, they can do that in the US, but not here in the EU, a minimum of 1year warranty is the law.

Zune has a 1 year limited warranty, not 90 day. Check the comparison chart Austin posted a few items back.

Hmmmm. That's good to know, although I don't see myself buying one, 80GB (off eBay or something) or not.

60GB Creative Zen Vision:W for the win!

@ Dominic: In Belgium the minimum is 2 years, obligated by law. Considering VAT is 21% here, I wouldn't expect anything else.

if ur the argueing type it is stated tht all electrical items in the EU must have 2 year warranty. So if u push 4 it u will get it

Edit:
DIRECTIVE 1999/44/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL
of 25 May 1999
on certain aspects of the sale of consumer goods and associated guarantees
Point 17:
Whereas it is appropriate to limit in time the period during which the seller is liable for any lack of
conformity which exists at the time of delivery of the goods; whereas Member States may also provide for a
limitation on the period during which consumers can exercise their rights, provided such a period does not
expire within two years from the time of delivery; whereas where, under national legislation, the time when
a limitation period starts is not the time of delivery of the goods, the total duration of the limitation period
provided for by national law may not be shorter than two years from the time of delivery;

Article 5 point 1:

The seller shall be held liable under Article 3 where the lack of conformity becomes apparent within two years as from delivery of the goods. If, under national legislation, the rights laid down in Article 3(2) are subject to a limitation period, that period shall not expire within a period of two years from the time of delivery.

Furthermore: Article 7 points out everything stated in the Directive 1999/44/EC is of binding nature: Everyone has to obey these rules.

my mistake on thinking the Zune had a 90-day warranty. Thought I read that from Austin's chart, but obviously not. My bust......
