Archos 604 wifi Reviewed x 2
comment: 16 | Monday, November 27 (2006) 01:14PM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
At the top-end of Archos' new line-up is the 604 wifi, a 30gb portable media player with a touch-sensitive widescreen display and 802.11b/g wireless networking. This thing is about as feature-packed as they get, although it's not exactley cheap at the going rate of $400 here in the US. Plus, you'll have to shell out extra for the DVR docking station ($100), MPEG-2/AC3 support ($20), and H.264/AAC support ($20). But if price is no object, the 604 wifi is the one to get, even topping our house favorite - Cowon's A2 - on everything except battery life and OGG/FLAC playback (of which Archos has stubbornly refused to support). With that in mind, on to the reviews...

I would not make a that big of an investment on a 604 WiFi. Everything is extra so once you actualy buy the accessories you need, the price would double quite easily. Also, Touch Screens and WiFi is not a new thing. The much loved Archos 04 series is not as good as people think it is once you start using it.

The touchscreen thing is cool and the WiFi features are pretty cool, alot better than the Zune... network servers looks really cool, means virtually unlimited storage... very cool... but as designfab said not really that new and since they have the touchscreen they should've or could've made the buttons maybe detachable or something...

I think Sam's Club has it for 380$, starting 370$ on froogle, you can get the DVR station starting at 60$ I think. Archos should be able to do some efforts with the price, will probably happen soon. I think somehow that retail stores will be able to resell the codec plug-ins also as optionnal accessory, it might work with somekind of code to use on the Archos site somehow, that's also explaining some of the price of 20-25$ per codec plugin justifying the margin.

It seems to have very good Wi-Fi range, I hope it'll soon support a usb keyboard using the Docking Station, a 3.5G bluetooth module would be nice to make it work out of hotspot reach, video streaming over the Internet and not only on the local Samba file-sharing network would be great. IPTV, VOD, Podcast and Webradio features will also be very awesome if and when those can be added in upcomming firmwares.

Yeah, I've pointed that out before, the price has been wrongly listed as $25 a few times

I think the only thing the PMA400 did better was the fact that it was running Linux os which meant it can be easily customized.

I picked my 604 wifi up on saterday from the futureshop here in vancouver bc.

$499 plus $1.09 (pack of gum) minus $50 (limited time spend over $500 and save $50 offer) came to $509 cnd after tax. got the dvr station a few weeks back on sale at future shop for $70cdn plus tax.

Very happy with it so far, my tv and movie collection at home is just under 1.5tb so i have plenty of bed time viewing to choose from. nice to surf the net while taking a shit too, been wanting to do that for years.

this player does not replace my daily pocket player though (currently an archos gmini400) its too big i bought it more for work and home and any traveling.

I do the net and bathroom thing all the time with my laptop. Just be clear the laptop goes on a dry drawer. Do you know how much bigger this is compared to the A2 and the previous gen AV500's?

IMO... Archos is a step ahead with the WiFi capabilities of this player.

This is the direction that we should be seeing all to the PMP makers going in the near future. Style-wise Archos needs a bit of improvement, but the features are there and at the moment I don't see anything else that compares.

Kudos to Archos for leading the pack, this can only get better as time goes along.

Im not sure how it compares to the A2 but tommorow at work i will hold it next to one, perhaps i will take some photos too if i remember my cammera.

As far as style goes i have no grippes with this player, very clean and efecient design. the build quality feels outstanding and the buttons are arranged very logically for navigating the player easily, of course with the wifi you can opt to use the touch screen, i tend to use a lil of both.
