Samsung to auction off YP-Z5...in 18K Gold
comment: 23 | Monday, December 04 (2006) 12:33PM | Posted by Michael
The Samsung YP-Z5 is one of those players that gets mentioned often but really hasn't won everyone over. It's definitely one of the nicest looking players to come out this year though and has made great strides in the firmware department (Gapless playback and improved battery life to name a few). As many of you know the Z5's software was designed by Paul Mercer, who prior to that designed the interface for iPods.

In honor of a million Z5's being sold, Mercer and Samsung will be auctioning off 10 YP-Z5's encased in genuine 18K Gold. Not only is the player made of gold, even the box it comes in is adorned with that shiny yellow stuff. Additionally each player has Paul Mercer's signature on the back. Samsung isn't the first to come out with a Gold player, Trekstor also has one with the i.Beat organix and it retails for a mere $19,999.99 (only 1 left in stock!). The pricing on these rare Z5's will start at $1, but Samsung is expecting them to go for 120,000 Won each. This is surely a must have for the insanely rich (or just insane) DAP collector. This auction is probably only available to Korea, but it's not like any of us were going to bid on it anyway.

Any idea what capacity?

One side note, went to Samsung's webpage and found the YP-Z5AB listed as an archived player, that is after I wasn't able to locate it in the "Select Model" dropdown menu. Samsung link --> [Linky]

Does Samsung plan to retire the Z5, to be replaced by the T9 and K3?

Looks awesome, except for the sig on the back. I would hope it'd at least be the 4 GB model.

This player really got bashed for the control system and I think that put a lot of people off trying it out. I found the control wasn't amazing but worked much better than any other player I'd ever had (mostely irivers) and the interface, size, drag and drop ability, +30 hour battery and OGG support really made it a winner. Since then gapless (with no downloading of data required like itunes) has meant it's completely replaced my player with rockbox on and with the OTF playlisting that's also not well known about (hold the middle button down for 3 seconds whilst on a song [yes i know that one iesn't all that intuitive!]) finally satisifed everything I wanted in a player. There's still improvements to be made and I have a t9 in the post but I reckon the gold Z5 would be an even better choice!!!

Hey Fluidity, does the playlisting work for albums and artists as well (ie. can you hold down the middle button and it will had an album like it would a single track)?

The worst thing about the Z5 is that text doesn't scroll. It's completely retarded, and is the only blemish on an otherwise super player. It figures the guy who designed the ipod interface would do something that retarded. He should have just signed the first 3 letters of his name.

Hey Paul Mercer, come out of your cave and discover MP3 players are used for Podcasts and audiobooks. Bookmarks should have been implemented in the software. Come out of the 18th century.
