The Korean website "Money Today" reports that iRiver will soon be releasing a new model, the S7. As you can see, it's not a particularly exciting development, as the S7 is a budget-minded player that that does not include any kind of display. The Korean version of an iPod Shuffle, in other words. The S7 will take on a similar size and shape as iRiver's S10, and features the same kind of navigation controller. They call it D-Click and the way it works is that you can click on the 4 edges of the top side of the player to activate various functions. Like a big thumb-pad that covers the front side of the player. Of course, without a screen there's considerably less to do with it. The S7 is likely limited to the same basic playback controls as the iPod Shuffle.
Features include support for MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG audio, SRS WOW HD audio effects (a software based DSP), and a runtime of around 9 hours per charge. That's about it. Storage is limited to 1gb of flash memory. The price is a little high at 89,000 Won ($99 USD).
The S7 will be available in several pastel colors, and it can be customized by purchasing stickers that cover the face of the player. These are the fancy type of stickers with some kind of 3D optical effect. Four different stickers-packs will be available, each with 6 unique designs for 3,500 Won ($4 USD). Collect all 24! Super happy fun time!
But don't get your hopes up, kiddies. Chances are that sales of the S7 will be limited to Korea. Everywhere else, the iPod Shuffle already has a lock on the market for cheap, screenless players. Except for China where even a knock-off of the Shuffle is a luxury item.
