Sandisk Sansa e200 Series w/ AM Tuner Coming Soon?
comment: 22 | Thursday, January 04 (2007) 10:28AM | Posted by Michael
The Sansa e200 series was one of the biggest surprises of 2006. It really put Sandisk on the map and helped propel them to a worthy market share position. I personally can't wait to see what they'll show at CES 2007, which is just a few days away. One player that may show up is an upgraded model of the e200 series that will come with an AM tuner. Yes you're reading that correctly, an AM tuner. You'd have to look far and wide to find a DAP with a built-in AM tuner. The closest example we have is the RadioYourWay from Pogo, and that's far from ideal.

Many people may be questioning the point of adding an AM tuner. From what I've seen, it's actually a commonly requested feature. I personally would use it to listen in to sports broadcasts but that's about it. Aside from the radio upgrade, the player will be exactly the same as the regular e200 players. Right now it's available for pre-order from Advanced MP3 Players for a little more than the regular version (£119 vs £109 for the e260). We'll have to wait and see if these make it to over to N. America.

Pre-Order the Sansa e260 at AMP3 HERE

Very cool, I would love this feature. I listen to FM mainly for sports only, but AM typically has more sports channels plus news and talk radio. If they can get AM reception to be decent (FM reception on the e200 is kind of flaky, sometimes great sometimes not) a lot of people will consider this for that feature alone.

I had actually emailed Pogo a while back asking about a future RadioYourWay model. Their answer, in short: "Hell no."

while I highly regard the FM tuner as a feature for DAP's, and use mine extensively, I can think of maybe 1 or 2 AM stations that I might listen to, and I know one of them would be too weak for the Sansa to pick up.

How about other feature additions, like gapless, OGG, FLAC, MPEG4, DivX/XviD, bookmarking, audible??? Those would be higher on the "most wanted feature" list then AM, IMO...

Maybe this is a "to be continued"......

AM radio rocks! I listen to it more often than FM because of news broadcasts.
Then again. I already HAVE AM/FM/SW radios around the house and my DAP is for music only.
So yeah, nice of Sandisk to do AM but I guess I'm not their target buyer.
How'bout Ogg Vorbis FFS?

This has to be a mistake. I don't see how they can cram an AM antenna coil into the e200. Plus, all the AM tuners chips I've seen are freaken huge. And have you held your MP3 player up to an AM radio lately? They give off so much RF that it can completely wash some AM stations out, so you might not get much with that tuner.

AM is nice, but I for one would have rather them improve their video capabilities and codec support.

i am thinking this is a mistake. my belief is that this is merely the new sandisk sansa with FM for europe that sandisk announced a month ago

[Linky]

if you look, advancedmp3 carries the old sansa without FM. i think they are carrying the new one with FM, but jumped too far and also made the AM claim. i could be wrong, though. have there been any other announcements? i didn't see anything on sandisk's website.

zip that could be right, but I just did a google search and found other stores that are listing it with the AM there . It could be an error to whoever sent the product info to these sites, or there could very well be an AM tuner.

Here's some other pages with the AM description:

Yep, I sent out an email to them (and Sandisk) a little while ago so hopefully we get a reply soon. For the time being I added a "?" to the title.

Here's the reply from AMP3:

Michael,

Thank you for your interest in the new Sansa e250.

This new model in the Sansa range does include an AM & FM tuner, this
should be with us by the 24th January.

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Advanced MP3 Players

So there you have it

interesting. I guess you didn't think to ask if the AM is the only added feature for this Sansa, Michael? This will obviously be the 2G Sansa, or will represent what improvements the Sansa will get to start the year off.

I and others will be disappointed if the AM tuner is the only thing added/modified/improved on the Sansa.....

I'm wondering about the interference noise using AM on a DAP...

Nah I didn't ask anything else. I can't imagine this really being a next gen Sansa as I think it might be just an upgrade for the European market. I'm still hoping they'll come out with something brand new in design at CES.

Damnit! I would have loved to have AM radio on my e270 (by far my favorite DAP). Mostly for football games and other sporting events. Too bad it couldnt be just a firmware update. Grrr

interesting. i still haven't gotten a reply from sandisk (i'm guessing you haven't either). hearing from the retailer still doesn't convince me 100%. its pretty obvious the retailers think they are getting am/fm from the 3 other links.

Looks like it was just a typo. Advanced has quietly removed AM from the title. And a fellow in the ABi forums says he received one (not sure how, I thought they weren't going to be available until the 24th?). It did indeed have an FM radio, but no AM. He also says it advertises AM "on the back of it", not sure what "it" is exactly, but I'm assuming the box. So, looks like this little miscommunication started at Sandisk and trickled down from there...
