AOL's Upcoming Wi-Fi Player
comment: 20 | Friday, January 12 (2007) 12:39PM | Posted by Michael
One little known surprise at this years CES was a new player coming out from AOL and Haier. Not exactly a pair known for making DAP's but this new player doesn't sound too bad. The player is currently known as the "Smartscreens Media Device" (but hopefully not for long). The SMD as I will call it has a nice set of features. Two that stand out are the built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. With Wi-Fi, the player will provide you with suggestions of similar songs and artists retrieved from the net while playing back music. You can also purchase tracks on the go from various services, as well as listen to streaming Internet radio.

The 30GB player has a pretty nice looking interface, and the metal body of the player should be pretty durable. The player is also capable of video playback with support for MPEG4 and WMV. Last but not least, the SMD is running on a Linux system that will allow users to add on to the player. The director of market development at AOL, Joe DeAngelis states "The Smartscreens platform is a framework that allows the flexible incorporation of different applications... so both enthusiastic programmers and formal partners may be able to add applications to the gadget. After all, it's running Linux."

Wow, that is the ugliest DAP I have ever seen.

EDIT: No wonder it looks like my fridge and dish-washer, Haier makes home appliances. [Linky]

I LOVE the design. I'm a sucker for brushed aluminium/steel... definately better than the iPod. Problem is it's from AOL...
Nice touch that it's using Linux, but still don't see much sense in the WiFi feature... now if I could use it as a VoIP phone with a mike, where WiFi is available, that would be interesting. Hm.

that is not a good picture... it has a brushed metal front that in other shots has looked better + brushed metal always looks better in person

im liking linux + wifi but really am waiting for a true video ipod with rockbox xD

Why does it look like a metal iPod?

Anyway, it sounds very promising on paper, except for the low capacity. I can't wait to hear more about it...when it has a new name.

I don't understand why it's been getting so lukewarm comments both here, on engadget and on anythingbutipod.
The one thing that has disappointed people (myself included) when the final spec's on promised WiFi-enabled DAPs are revealed, is that uploading already owned content is not possible.
Here is a player running Linux and the manufacturer is saying that 3rd party applications is allowed. Wouldn't that imply the possibility of enabling WiFi-sync'ing with the computer?
Forget about the looks of the (actually any) DAP. It's gonna be in your pocket anyway. It's all about a sufficient interface and features!

And WiFi-sync'ing is a killer feature!!!

This is a very promising device.
My only fear is that it won't be available here in Denmark, since AOL is not operating in this market. :-/

Yea, to the batteries.

It looks like it was designed by a car mechanic. I'd still buy it if it had the features.

Someone mentioned VoIP. Check out this video . He hints at VoIP as a possible feature. I think this device has great promise if they follow through.

No info about that pad in the middle...

Is it like a four way touch pad?
Or can it be a scroll square? lol
Can the use of it be changed with firmware?
This looks promising....

It's a backup screen in case the main screen gets broken. LOL
