Announced three days ago, the Sony
NW-A800 series was met with a resounding "meh" from our members, as well as the press. There's a number of reasons why this was the case. First the design wasn't anything new. In fact, it has a passing resemblance to the
Archos 104. The second factor in my opinion is the biggest. This player simply arrived too late to the market. Video-capable flash players like the Meizu M6, Cowon D2, and iriver clix 2 set standards that this new video walkman has not surpassed. Someone actually got their hands on this player and have provided a very good video preview for your viewing pleasure:
The interface looks pretty good but nothing that really blew me away. With all the negativity surrounding this player it sounds like it's doomed before it's even released. Let's not mark the tombstone on this player just yet however. The A800 still offers a nice array of features and codec support including AAC and H.264, gapless playback with ATRAC files (speculated), and 28 hours of battery life. It' also comes with a nice pair of stock earbuds.

It looks like there are no right-click style context menus.. so changing to landscape view and searching alphabetically for artists takes a bit more effort...
I'm not a big fan of icon based menus either, though perhaps this can be changed. If if had a Big Mac and a large fry icon, perhaps it would make a good learning tool of future Golden Arches cashiers....
If this was a 16gb or higher capacity device, perhaps it would be more desirable.. but being Sony, it would be priced at a premium.
