Meizu Music Card (M3) Released in China + Meizu at CeBIT 2007
comment: 8 | Wednesday, March 28 (2007) 03:08PM | Posted by Michael
Meizu just released their newest iPod, err..I mean M-series player. The Music Card (aka the M3) is clearly Meizu's answer to the Nano; having similar dimensions, design, and screen size. The player was recently released in China and should make it over here in the next few months. Here's a run-down of it's features:

  • Capacity: 2, 4, and 8GB
  • 1.5" display (262K color support)
  • Audio: MP3, FLAC, Ogg, WMA Lossless, and WAV
  • Video: Xvid at 25fps
  • FM Tuner, Voice Recorder, and Text Support
  • Battery Life: 23 hours for audio, 5 hours for video
  • Dimensions: 81mm x 39mm x 6.9mm
  • Price (in US): $65, $80, and $120

Say what you want about Charbax's interview style but his DAP coverage at CeBIT 2007 was definitely respectable. Below you'll find his interview with an engineer at Meizu's booth. The video shows the Music Card in action, as well as some info on the M8.

Very nice price points.. especially $120 for 8GB. Good codec support, good battery life. Looks like a winner to me.

form factor, format support, battery life are all great. prices are amazing. the one thing that seems like a severe tripping point is combining the forward and back functions in one button. the short press / long press seems like a poor solution.

Now are those prices in China or here?

Those prices are converted from CNY (Chinese Yuan) prices. They were from Meizu Me's site but the conversions are correct. In China it's 500/599/899 CNY.

I kind've agree with you zip. I've actually become spoiled by the rocker buttons beside the touchstrip on the ZVM so this touchstrip looks bare to me.

The biggest thing that surprises me is WMA Lossless support. I'm not even sure if I've seen that on anything but PMC players. I wonder if they actually got that licensed. Not sure how all that works anyway.

Certainly hits all the right buttons and am waiting for the obligatory dismantling to see if there's anything new under the hood. Probably best not to hold one's breath for the 8GB model, especially when they're still trying to supply the 8GB MiniPlayer.

Yeah, those are China-market prices: 500/599/899 RMB. The 4GB is obviously the sweet spot, which is probably going to make those harder to get at first, too.

Prices are fantastic, codec/format support looks solid, GUI looks adequate, battery life is really good. But the controls look awful and I'm having a little trouble with the iPod Nano ripoff design. I mean, at least the M6 didn't look like an existing iPod.

With the 4GB M6 miniplayer going for $110 ( [Linky] ), how certain are we that the 8GB M3 will go for $120?

I would assume Dane-Elec will add some mark up to cover their distribution costs (with a little profit added into the mix).
