Creative's Zen Wav - Flash player w/ Built-in Speakers
comment: 24 | Wednesday, May 23 (2007) 12:40PM | Posted by Michael
A couple of days ago, epiZENter.net (our Creative webring) leaked info on an upcoming Creative player called the Zen Wav. It wasn't exactly welcomed with open arms to say the least, and some were even wondering if it was a real product. It's definitely real, and Creative has recently added it to their site. The stock photo does more justice to the player than the original scan that was shown. Still, even with this new image, the design has not won me over. The specs on the other hand are a bit more attractive to me, The player's biggest attraction is its' built-in stereo speakers. This new player was no doubt inspired by Samsung's sexier YP-K5.

Features:

  • Display: 1.5" TFT screen, 65K colors
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, WAV, and Audible
  • Video: Transcoded AVI
  • Built-in mini Stereo Speakers
  • FM Tuner
  • Line-in and Voice recorder
  • E-Book support (I'm assuming .TXT support)
  • Battery Life: 30 hours of audio playback, 20 hours when using speakers
  • Dimensions: 85.0 x 42.0 x 12.5 mm
  • UMS/MSC device

The 30 hours of battery life is definitely nice. If I'm not mistaken, that's due to the Sigmatel STMP3600 chip being utilized. As you can see from the picture, the player comes with an "Acoustic stand". According to Creative, the acoustic stand is "a unique docking station ...that allows the MP3 player to emit rich concentrated sound waves, providing better audio quality and entertainment to the listener". Sounds good to me. The player will debut at Creative's upcoming Warehouse sale in Singapore (May 25th -27th) and as of right now it will only be sold there. The price for the 2GB player is the same as the Neeon 2, at $179 Singapore dollars, or around $117US.

I really like the looks of this unit...

CREATIVE needs something new/different, and this might just be the ticket.

We'll Soon See...

I am glad they're trying new things (albeit, things others have already tried). I do wish this looked better though. I long to see it in black.

I really don't think it'll be released outside of Asia. It's basically the Neeon 2 with a different casing, built-in speakers.and a few other mods (display change, added features).

Neeon was better.

Maybe in terms of looks, but not in the specs department. The display is better on this, longer battery life, and more features. I also prefer the joystick to the Neeon 2's jog dial, but that's subjective.

This looks like a mini Sleek Photo, or even a flash Dell Pocket DJ. 30 hours battery is very nice....I can understand why the Stone's batt life is low - due to it's size, and the size of it's battery - but why doesn't the Zen V have battery life this good? Doesn't it also utilize the STMP 3600 SoC??

That will be the chavs choice lol (playing crappy niche music on buses through there lil speakers :@)

Batt life is a plus though, but by god its ugly lol

It could be the type of display being used Lacene. The Neeon 2 also uses a different display than the ZVP (CSTN) and got 20 hours of battery life. I'd have to assume it also has the STMP3600 in it since it was released soon after the ZVP

Zen V Plus - 1.5" OLED display - 15 hours
Neeon 2 - 1.5" CSTN display - 20 hours
Wav - 1.5" TFT display - 30 hours

The ZVP is also shorter than the other two, so there's a possibility that the size and type of battery inside is smaller and consequently less powerful.

pecker, I'm sure that you don't need to play through the speakers on noisy buses, or in other noisy environments. You can still use the headphones, as always. But the speakers allow for you to share your music or videos with others in a easy, practical fashion.

The Wav is 3.3" long, which is shorter than my Sansa at 3.5", and it's as thick as my Sansa (0.5"), so you don't sacrifice form factor by implementing the speakers, like Samsung did with their YP-K5. You could conceivably never use the speakers, if you have no use for them.....

@ssjmichael: yep, you may be right about that. However, considering how pixelated the Zen V's OLED screen is, I wouldn't mind them switching it out with the Wav's screen, if you get a bonus in battery life, the pixel resolution isn't worse, and you're able to carry over the 250K colour pallette.....

This thing is unbelievably ugly and unoriginal... Sorry Creative but this just isn't what I'm looking for.

Creative has potential, the ZVM was a brilliant player (not in the size department) but they just don't seem to be doing much these days. Or maybe, they are still working on something amazing. Looking forward to more from Creative.

I, for one, am sick and tired of 'delicate/feminine' looking DAP/PMP units, and it's high time that another company beside MS/ZUNE came out with something that the 'average' guy wouldn't be embarrassed to carry around.

That's why I dig the more 'industrial/rugged' looks of this player.

If this comes in Black/GunMetal Grey... I'll order it sight unseen!

lol thats why i liked the 404 so much Daharder.

@lacane

I know u'll be ale to use through an headphone jack.

I was taking the pish out of chavs, how they like to annoy every1 with there music . when every other person who wants to listen to music will use headphones they choose to share the annoyin music with every1.

A dap with speakers is not even close to being a good idea.

With the proper application (read: Sumsung K5) I think it could work, but like this, I can already here the tinny sound and it does NOT sound good.

What application does the K5 have that this wouldn't? I could see the use for a single, unobtrusive, small, rear-mounted speaker to bring the voice recorder function up to par with stand-alone units, but to use the prime real estate of the front panel to mount stereo speakers as if that's actually necessary or useful in some obvious way strikes me as being about half way to retarded and way past clueless.

Steve,

They're just trying something 'different', and variety in the marketplace is certainly a good thing.

There's is no more wasted 'real estate here' than on the NANO with its disproportionately small LCD is there?

At least this space is doing something...

Yes, but different for the sake of different doesn't do anything for me, and tiny useless speakers on a dap do even less, so the two in combination just really piss me off...

If it had phonbuttons and the body was half black half silver it would be exactly like the SE T610. Look: [Linky]

I don't like speakers in cellphones or dap's. Here in germany gangsta-wannabes use their cellphones like ghettoblasters. It's really annoying and you can't go by bus without being forced to listen to some crap Aggro Berlin "music" (they describe themselves as the "German G-Unit").

So: No, I don't like that DAP. And I do hope that it's not gonna be released in Germany.
