Samsungs High Quality YV-150 DAP / Voice Recorder

About two-ish years ago Samsung openly declared their intent to dethrone the mighty Californian fruit and become the worlds No. 1 DAP manufacturer. While many of us were skeptical at the time Samsung clearly had a game plan, and although they have yet to accomplish their goal they are bringing out some absolutely delightful DAPs.

The K5 and K3 are some fine examples, both containing similar feature sets and gorgeous designs. Samsungs newest addition, the YV-150, hasn't deviated from that plan of great design. It is a well crafted, well design DAP come voice recorder.

The YV-150 comes with a hands-free mic and phone adapter, just to prove it is serious about recording . The built-in mic is at the top of the device, and built into the back is a rather decent speaker (apparently).

Here's the tickler folks, it runs on 2 AAA batteries and is capable of recording up to 66 of material, although that figure crashes to 16 hours recording when using the highest quality setting. Capacities are limited to 1 & 2gb, so that will be a let down for some, but at least Samsung are focusing on something other than just looks.

It is almost $200 for the 1GB version... Seems too pricy, but there are certain people that may like the recording features...

I kind of want to get one for recording voices and such but the price and the fact that 2gigs is the max kind of put its down for me. For that price it should have at least 4gigs. Anyone know how the recording quality of this device is?

Nice battery life for the speaker. Almost 3 times as much as the k5. (Although this speaker is much smaller.)

How good can an in-body mic be on a device of that size? Is this a niche device, or what? I Always thought that people that wanted recorders (or devices primarily designed for recording) want some sort of pre-amp and line in capability. Will this be marketed for that segment?

O_o True. I guess the line in quality will have to be determined later. Who knows, maybe it will make ripples.

If quality recording is a requirement take a look at the Edirol R-09 or Zoom H2 or Boss Micro BR . This Samsung device looks to be targetted more towards the digital dictaphone market.

On the subject of Samsung, - for a flash manufacturer their devices seem to be under-specified in the capacity department. Something like the K3 with 8GB or 16GB built-in and mini or micro SDHC expandability, combined with the recording features seen here, that would actually show they are serious about the "no 1 dap manufacturer" target. (Rather than simply allowing Apple to increase the nano capacity before they release their next minor increase in capacity.)
