New Toshiba Gigabeat w/ WiFi Leaked

Hot from the dripping faucets at the FCC, comes this leaked info about a new WiFi-capable Toshiba Gigabeat. You might be asking yourself, isn't a WiFi Gigabeat essentially the same thing as the Zune? Pretty much yes, but this new Gigabeat will actually be a flash player. There aren't many details at all available yet but here's what we know:

  • Model name: Toshiba Gigabeat MET401 (M-Series?)
  • Capacity: 4GB Flash Memory
  • 2.4" Display
  • Built-in WiFi
  • Running Windows Embedded
  • Dimensions: 54mm x 85.6 x 9.9mm (70g)

Looking at those dimensions, this upcoming player should be slightly larger than the Meizu M6 (48.2mm x 79mm x 10mm). As you can see, this new player won't be using Microsoft's now dead Portable Media Center OS, but as the back of the player indicates, it will instead be powered by their newest CE system called Windows Embedded. Could this really be for a flash Zune? It's possible, but from what I've read, Microsoft won't be relying on Toshiba for that new player. We'll be sure to fill you in when we find out more!

Hmmm flash Zune sounds interesting but I would have tought it be more based off the Gigabeat U series. Maybe they are also replacing/updating(again) the U series with this?

I think that would be too big for an 8GB device... This is almost the size of the iriver H10.

Considering it has WiFi components inside design? I'm also surprised you'd think that since these are the measurements for the D2:

78.0 X 55.4 X 16.6 mm.

Basically it's around the same height as the D2 and much thinner, but will be wider since it will likely need to make room for controls (rather than the touchscreen of the D2).

You mean good specs crap battery. From what I hear the only problem the S had was battery and a firmware on some models. And the problem the Zune has is battey.

if it maxes out a 4gb, then that's just pathetic.

at least 8gb with expansion, decent codec, TV-out, and at least 20-hour battery and i'll buy it.

I think we'll see an 8GB version. This is just the FCC's reporting so they're only writing down what the player given to them has inside. I'm assuming this player will be like the iriver W10.

like the W10 in function you mean? Like its ability to connect to the internets?

I wonder what use that'd be on a screen as small as that?

Yeah in terms of WiFi. Most likely to retrieve songs from a content provider. Maybe the Sansa Connect is a better example here.

Is the W10 definitely confirmed to have a fully functioning WiFi? Like, do you know if you will be able to do things like browse the web? When it was shown at CES they seemed to only be highlighting the partnership they had with Rhapsody. I do remember seeing a video of it running the basic Windows CE (in Korea I believe), but I wouldn't be surprised if this functionality is taken away for the US release.

You know about as much as I do Mike.

iRiver have been sketchy with their details. The W10 has an "Integrated Wi-Fi Adaptor & Wi-Fi Positioning System" and in Europe it will run Windows CE, these two factors combined would lead to the assumption that the W10 could browse the web and might shed some light on why they are taking so long..... but like anything, nothing is official until the day it is released
