16gb Creative Zen V+, First Out The Door?
comment: 42 | Thursday, August 02 (2007) 11:49AM | Posted by Dominic
Sometime today Creative sneakily updated their Singapore online store to include the option of a 16gb version of their popular mini dap the Zen V+. Priced at $399 (Singapore Dollars) or $262.70 US, its exceptional value for money. Creatives colour choice for this model is questionable in my opinion so I would be hoping that it becomes available in other variants as well.

Unfortunately the 16gb model is out of stock, and until it comes into stock the title for "First 16gb Flash DAP" is still up for grabs, with Apple announcing "stuff" on Tuesday there is every chance they could yet pip Creative to that title, here's hoping they don't.

apple's conference is supposed to be focused entirely on macs. not to mention i doubt they'd release a new ipod before the back-to-school mac+ipod deal is over.

I think we'll definitely see a 16GB nano by the end of the year though. I'm just hoping Creative can get this player over here before then.

unleash the beast! Creative one ups Apple. At least for now. But with the impending release of the new iPod and ZV:M, it will be taken to the next level.

Well that is what sounds logical and that what I have been reading rockin'. However, there are many rumors going around that a 2in screen nano with video with the possibility of 16gigs being announced that day. All that means is it may come out by the time back to school promotion is over(2 weeks after).

One thing we have to remember is Sandisk one uped Apple with the 6gig Sansa and leaked pics of the 8gig model before Apple had their stuff out and we saw how well it did for them. Now if Creative can at least do some ad for the 16gig ZV+ even if its latter in the latter night hours(10 or after) or early day hours(6-7am) then they may create some buzz. Or do a give away like MS did with the Zune on a talk show.

This is great news for Creative! I'm surprised that they were able to beat Sandisk at least at announcing a higher capacity flash DAP, since Sandisk makes their own......

Let's hope the new ZV+ arrives more quickly, like the Stone, and not like the Micro Photo and ZVM, which were rather glacial events.......

Why?

Question: why would you even want a 16GB Zen V?
The 4GB version takes over 3hours to fill, compared to 15 minutes for a Samsung or iPod device of same capacity.
Do you really want to spend 12hours transferring music to the damn thing?

Michael

Dinko, first I don't think a slow transfer speed is going to actually the deciding factor when choosing a player. Second, the transfer speed was quicker than that for me. It is slower than other players, but I don't think it'll take 12 hours to fill it up. Besides, most people aren't going to do it in one sitting so it's hardly a big deal at all. Other things like battery life, features, design, and price have a bigger influence on a decision than how fast you can transfer a song.

especially for price on this baby. 16 gigs. 20 more dollars than the 8 GB IPOD NANO. now THATS a steal.

he probably means he wishes that Creative could get the jump on Apple with the 16GB DAP, at least for a little while, and maybe make some news about it, and perhaps improve in the market, so that they'd be more of a competitor.

Apple can still announce whatever they want, just later.....

hmmm have you taken confusion pills? having major difficulty reading what I have written? I really do think I have worded my sentences very clearly, is anyone else having the same trouble decoding them as zip22?

I apologise if that came off a bit sarky, it is early in the morning here, i'm tiring and really fall to see what you are missing zip22.

but to break it down here's what I said:

"Unfortunately the 16gb model is out of stock, and until it comes into stock the title for "First 16gb Flash DAP" is still up for grabs, with Apple announcing "stuff" on Tuesday there is every chance they [apple] could yet pip Creative to that title, here's hoping they don't.

So Creative today have shown that they are releasing a 16gb flash player, but if on Tuesday Apple announce the same then it very likely will overshadow Creatives announcement. Being that Creative is in more need of attention than Apple, I would rather they [Creative] get it [the attention] and from the extra exposure become more competitive rather than the opposite [where the news of a 16gb flash player from Creative is overshadowed] should Apple announce a 16gb flash player on Tuesday.

i think it's pretty straightforward. you encourage the idea of a 16gb flash iPod, however, you'd rather Creative be the first one's to introduce a 16gb flash player to the market instead of apple.

I agree with that. This is what happened with Sandisk, when they were the first to announce an 8GB capacity flash DAP, with their e280 Sansa. They announced it a good month before Apple announced their 8GB Nano, but Apple was ready to sell and ship the very day they announced, and people were receiving their 8GB Nano's the next day....

Sandisk took almost a month later to finally start putting the e280 into people's mitts. So even though Sandisk claims to be the first to bring a 8GB flash DAP, the claim is a little dubious to me.....

I wouldn't worry too much.

From Macworld:

[Linky]

Apple will gather select press at its company headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. next week for what it said would be a presentation focused on the Mac.

... and Mac Rumors

[Linky]

Rumors have been indicating that the iMac is set for a dramatic refresh on that date, with iLife and iWork updates perhaps also in the wings.

So I think we're good.

It's still a V+... not a bad player, but nothing too exciting.

That 16GB of flash would be more welcomed in any number of other players I can think of.. at least we're on the road to larger capacity...

Creative needs to promo this and not let it sit by, as this was the mistake that was made with the ZVM.
The 16Gb flash threshold was finally broken by Creative, and they need to run with it, but at least the threshold was broken, and now 16Gb of flash (whether it is daps, or SDHC cards, etc.) now maybe the price will fall to acceptable range.
I remember the mistake SanDisk made (referenced my Lacene), and it would be nice for SanDisk to also ship a 16Gb player as their manufacturing process is in house, but (at least IMO), they need to improve sound quality and support for their devices (I owned a e280, which I returned). I didn't like the sound, also the device starting falling apart within a few months, so I returned it under a buyer's protection plan I had. Maybe I just got a bad device, but I had heard the sound quality was basically bad for the e200 series all the way around. The support was absolutely clueless, as I had contacted them many times, and really got nowhere.

Since I helped you out could you do they same for me by pointing out how your new interpretation on your original post adds up?
Perhaps this is very straight forward, however the two perspectives seem very disjointed to me.

they are basically saying the same thing. the second just has the part about overshadowing in there.

1
so you don't want apple to release a new product

2 (moving the extra part to the end)
so you are hoping apple doesn't release a new product (and overshadow creative)

back to the topic at hand, i agree with the way you reported it (as a question - waiting for the actual product), but i don't agree with how michael reported it on epizenter. the product hasn't really been released, and i think we should wait until it is actually in the wild (and maybe in more regions than just singapore) before calling it released. michael doesn't even mention that its not in stock (only alludes to it when saying "the player will come in black...").

Well not exactly, I want Apple to release a new product of course, just not on Tuesday, not so soon after this announcement because that would cast a big shadow over Creatives limelight, and for a healthier competitive state to evolve Creative could really do with some of that limelight.

I will mention to Michael what you have commented on, we are always delighted to hear feedback from all our DAPreview.net (and associated webring) members and nothing goes unlistened to. Thank you for your concern zip22.

i dont see how anyone could misread Dominic's posts, he just wants Creative to come out with the 16gb flash player first. in a way itd be fun seeing someone else release something new besides apple. thats my interpretation. i dont see apple releasing a new iPod nano the coming week. or we may, not sure.
But i hope Creative releases this player JUST as fast as the Zen Stone

Unfortunately, if Creative doesn't offer a UMS option they're garbage as far as i'm concerned. It's too bad, because a sleek little player like the the V+ that has video and lots of other features is just the sort of player I like, but MTP is a dog.

i for one dont mind MTP at all. well since i use XP SP2 its fine for me. do ums players like the Cowon players support ID3? if not that, UMS isnt for me, since i have all my music VERY organized and tagged properly, and like it organized by artist, album's genres

A player will say it supports ID3 tagging if it supports it usually on the product page. Cowons newer players support both ID3 libraries and file / folder libraries, however Cowon players have been able to read the ID3 information since at least the X5 if not further back.

Steve

Aug 04 (2007) 07:03PM

ID3 browsing vs. folder browsing isn't associated directly with UMS vs. MTP. Some players allow both folder and ID3 browsing and some only allow one or the other (I think the trend nowadays is for players to allow both, most of mine do, ie Carbon, Vibez, XS202, Z5). Some players also allow the choice between MTP and UMS, but there's no inherent dependency between connection protocol and browsing method.

I also have XP sp2, and MTP just doesn't work on my computer for some reason. I suspect it's a motherboard chipset/firmware issue but i'm not going to waste my time troubleshooting MS's stupid protocol. To me MTP just adds a layer of complication and annoyance to the user experience for no good reason. It's just a greater restriction against the end user.

That's a fair point Dominic so, logically, I'd imagine that you'd like Apple to start selling heaps more computers so as to put the shits up MS?

why? this is a DAP site, not a computer site.... all I care about here is DAP's.

But yes on that topic, I would love Apple to sell more computers, that'd be great, and it might get them to lower their prices to boot.... Heck I've helped them out by buying 2 working Macs this year (and 2 faulty macs too ) But overall I'd like to see greater mainstream development of Linux, it is by far the best OS.
