Sony PMX-U50 Hands-On
comment: 8 | Wednesday, August 08 (2007) 10:58PM | Posted by Michael
Sony is testing the PMP waters with the release of the PMX-M70 and the U50. Unfortunately, unless you're in China you won't be able to get your hands on one of these. That's where this whole internet thing plays a role. Someone over there took some nice pictures of the U50 for us curious onlookers:

The player is much smaller than I first imagined. The curved speaker adds a different, yet still appealing look from most other players out there. The cross-media bar interface (as seen on the PSP/PS3) is also a welcomed addition. Although these players don't really bring anything new and innovative to the PMP market, I'd still like to see them sold outside of China. I'm tired of seeing PMP's from the same companies year after year. Sony has something good here and should take advantage of it.

heh, GUI kinda sorta like the DAB-enabled D2 GUI, and yet not really like it, at all.....

I can't help but be reminded of that Toshiba Gigabeat PMP, with that bulbous, rounded end.......the PMX U50 has some junk in it's trunk....

I like the PMX-M70 design more, only if it was in a 3in form factor. But this look very promising, but its a shame max space is 8gigs, at least they could have added a MSDuo card slot for expansion.

I kinda don't like screen to pmp size ratio. It reminds me older Archos devices.

I love the GUI, I guess i'm into those icon style GUI's at the moment. I want to get the Samsung P520 and that has a similar icon GUI...

This device looks pretty cool though, and very very similar to those ipod nano video renderings that were floating about a few weeks ago.

I'm with you on the screen to player ration Seija. I would like it if it were wider and the controls didn't dominate the bottom.

Looks to me the GUI is the XMB that is used in the PSX, PSP, and PS3.

I mentioned that in the post Echo

"The cross-media bar interface (as seen on the PSP/PS3) is also a welcomed addition."

Its more like an old Samsung PMP (forgot the model) than an old archos imo.

I really want to see pics of the M70.

Its a cool little player. Sadly only china availability makes it a no go for me!
