Is this the Cowon X7?
comment: 35 | Thursday, August 09 (2007) 11:16AM | Posted by Michael
Summer is here, but the rumored X7 is no where to be found. We were just sent an image of an X7 mockup that's said to be an early prototype made by Cowon:

What do you think of it? It looks like a larger version of the Cowon D2 to me, but with the same design elements found on the X5. Real or not, it's a very nice looking device and is exactly what I'm looking for in an X5 successor. I'll let you be the judge on whether it's authentic or not. We may find out by the end of this month, as Cowon may show off some new players at the upcoming IFA '07. If it's not the X7, it might just be the D3

Thanks tekesh

I hope it's not x7.

I want a dap, not pmp.

The Cowon logo on the player looks really Photoshopped somehow.

My guess is that this is the D3 :p

I would definitely skip on this one!
Pocket-usability would be a desaster on such a device - even the COWON D2 is a pain in the ass when it's about skipping tracks or changing Volume with the player in your pocket.

I don't think this mockup here has anything to do with the real X5-successor - this here is just a smaller Q5 if you ask me.

But if it's real, I'd rather buy another 60GB Zen Vision:M.

looks more like they scrapped the original idea for the a3, and went more with their q5 style, minus the pda/gps functionality (i assume) then put it together and called it the "x7"

if that pic is from cowon, of course

The connector on the bottom looks a lot like an iPod dock connector. I'm sure it isn't, but it's interesting all the same.

It's actually a connector that's being used by a few different devices in Korea. The Samsung YP-K5 (and K3 I believe) uses it. The iriver clix also uses it.

@zip22.

IMO, dap is mainly focus on audio, while pmp focuses on video.

I don't like to watch video that much. I want something I can carry around, operate easily with one hand, etc.

needs more color sound

I hope it doesn't use a subpack, that is probably the biggest neg I have with my x5.

I'm sure its not the D3. Its too early for Cowon to release a successor when the D2 is doing really well

Is that a sensor next to the microphone? I think it looks alright except for the gloss.

1.) If that's the connector, then there won't be subpack

2.) Cowon may indeed be coming out with a D3 by the end of this year

3.) That is a sensor at the top, most likely for remote control use.

I dunno what this is but we might find out in about 1 weeks and a half or so. Because when I spoke to tech support they told me they have been hearing things around the office that cowon has plans to release something(s) in two weeks or so and that was a week ago.

So yeah. Do I think this is an X7? No. The D3? maybe. New version of the A3? No. It maybe just a whole new device with a 3in screen 16iggs of flash with a SD card slot(no side view so I assume there would be) and windows ce as the os.

Is that an IR port on the top? Or is that as SSJ put it for remote control use? I doubt it would be IR port as it is a aging/dying technology.

If this is the X7, then the X7 is off my list of a possible future player. Like enigman, I too am more interested in a DAP form factor than a PMP form factor.......

Well, quite frankly, if that is the X5 successor, I am sorely disappointed. I am eagerly awaiting the release of the new Cowon HDD player. My X5 is aging and needs replacing and am really hoping the X7 will continue to be a music player first and foremost. This would be a huge pain to put in your pocket. Oh, I believe that that is the same plug used on the X5 meaning we could see a return of the subpack. Unless they ship with individual cables.

I thought it was obvious the X7 would be more video focused, that's just the way the market is. I'd personally like a touchscreen X7, as long as they sell, or better yet, include, a wired remote.

Definetely really cool looking, but I still don't like touch screen interfaces that much LOL looks more like an A2 successor in my books..

Looking carefully at proportions, I would suppose X5 successor / new geration A2:

screen - 4" / 16:9
box - 115 / 59 / 12 mm.

I have no problems using the d2 in my pocket... if you set the player on hold you can change the settings to allow access to the volume buttons... and program the menu button to go to the next track... IMO very usable in the pocket...

As for the player.... Looks nice : ) but after playing with using a 12 gig flash player... I dont know if i could ever go back to the time it takes the hd to startup/loadup ect...

Yes, it's a fake. But if what pitagor says about size is true, and they offered a wired remote (or included it), I'd be all over it. That's right, I change my mind. That and the settings that Allen mentioned make this... not as bad as I thought. Oh, the original specs for the X5 (without the screen hump) are 104 x 61 x 15 making this photochop smaller in width and thickness but 1 mm longer. Shame it's a fake.

Well we know its a mock up, but who's to say its not an initial design? Or do you know something we don't vidas my friend? You have some secrets to share?

My comment didnt get in.

Anyhow... from the button sizes (assuming theyre the same as on d2 and i7). This "mock" would be 11-12cm wide, 6-7cm high, 1-2cm deep. The sceen would be about 4-5inches wide cant really tell.

I like it though. But i would say i seems this is more of a plausible sucessor to the d2. Who knows what it is.

nice though.

I think if this is a real design of a Cowon player, it might be a successor of A2 (the long awaited A3). The A3 should have been originally out in April, but nobody has seen one yet. The original idea of A3 was just an updated A2. Cowon says, that they are incorporating more modifications. And they also say, that the A3 should be out in August/September 2007.

It just seems to me too thin to take a HDD drive. I would really love to get a Cowon PMP till end of September and if this is the A3, I will most likely take it. Also I was thinking about Q5, but it will be probably too expensive.

when i saw this on gizmodo about a week ago, it was listed as having a 7 inch screen. therefore, no way an X5 successor.

A week ago? you get sucked into a time loop? giz posted this the same day as we did

Also Giz got confused about this X7 having a 7inch screen and the Villiv X7 , which does indeed have a 7inch screen. So to some up Giz was wrong, therefore your equation is wrong

I was wrong. Recalculating dimensions compare with only exact part - connector (which is exactly like in my M3), the result is:

screen - 3,3" / 16:9
box - 88 / 49 / 10 mm.

The picture is very carefully made, so this is probably real design work. But the connector is too close to the screen to be real, and the proportions of the screen are not exact 16:9 but 16:8,5.

May be X5 successor, but with 16GB flash, who knows?

I hope it does have a real USB port instead of these proprietary ports like X5. I hope it also include a hardware play/pause button.
Besides that, looks good and interesting.
