Samsung YP-P2 = Hot!
comment: 41 | Monday, August 13 (2007) 07:25PM | Posted by Michael
It's been a while since we've seen something new from Samsung. Sure there's the K3, but that was merely a speakerless version of the K5. Enter the P2, easily one of the best looking devices these eyes have seen. The touchscreen interface is drool worthy and reminds me of a fusing of the K3/K5 interface with that of the LG Prada Phone. I can only describe so much though, so I'll let this video say the rest:

Very few details are known at this point. From the video alone you can tell the P2 is a bluetooth ready. has video playback, and will work as a MSC device. We'll definitely update you when we find out more.

Looking pretty nice, indeed!

Looks like the Samsung team really thought this one out.

I think we know who to thank for those reflective touch-based screens and whose interface reminds me of the same device.

Uh oh, he made a circle movement with his thumb and also reversed it! I thought Apple patented that ingenious control.

Why do Samsung's players never show cover art?

looks great but i am defenitly not in the market for a touch only device. sure it cleans up the design but it makes it alot less user friendly, i never take my gmini400 out of my pocket to change tracks or volume or anything when im on the go and wouldn't trade practical usage for something a lil more shiny. defenitly looks like the device size:screen size ratio i want though, couple buttons on the side and im sold.

yesm, the two GUI's are very similar, obviously both are differently adapted for their differing units, but the main GUI menu's are the same

no ogg vorbis

Means I'd end up using more space....

Only 8gbs too SAMSUNG makes flash, so, what the hell gives....

I love that GUI and design, but the unconfirmed specs are somewhat disappointing, but I may yet say buh bye to my D2 too

BUT this has to be released soonish! Not like the "iriver W10" that never was!

That looks really really nice. I presume the loading "Now Playing" takes longer than loading a video because of the visualisations so you'd better be able to turn them off.
Why is the sliding for previous/next the wrong way round though? Surely it should be left for previous, right for next.

Not usually a fan of Sammy stuff, but seeing as though Creative haven't announced their next biggy, this will definitely top of the list depending on 3 things:
1) A scroll bar on the artist/track lists etc when the lists go off the edge that works the same as the progress bar on the now playing screen, i.e drag it with your finger to move it.
2) At least 16Gb, hopefully because of the Zen V+ it will make that happen.
3) Decent battery for that screen.

Reminds me a lot of the Gigabeat F with its cross gestures which were absolutely perfect for using while driving, so hopefully this will be better. Up/Down motion for previous/next album pleeeeease!

I was thinking the same thing. Let's hope that gets changed by release time.

Dominic,

it was indeed that German/Austrian site. I have not been able to find any additional info but they do look plausible so I am inclined to believe them.

^^^ pity, I'd love to post them but really we try to post as close as possible to official specs...

Epithetless, ilh, I think what samsung have done here is try to mimic the iphone in the way it navigates. ie. where you pull pages up on the iphone, here on the P2 you virtually pull the next song across.... kinda cool, but I don't know if i'd like it either

Without Ogg V and FLAC support I am out.

A shame as it does look amazingly cool. That screen would be great for eBooks as well.

Haven't Sammy added Ogg support after release on a number of their players? Probably do the same with this.

Digging around a bit there's a few places saying an estimated 30 hours battery and 6 for video, which is pretty damn good for a screen that size.

Ears jack is at the bottom which i've never liked

The left/right gestures look backward at first glance, but make perfect sense when you think about it. Think of it as spinning a 3-dimensional wheel and it'll all come together.

You shouldn't have to think about it though, it should be the first thing that your thumb does, which to most would be left for previous and right for next as that's the layout of previous/next buttons on every physical device that has them.

If there's any weird metaphorical thinking to be done i'd think of it as dragging the pointer forward (right) to get further forward and backwards (left) to get further back like it is for ALL the scroll bars and progress bars in the rest of the GUI

I was starting to think it was something "innovative" like that...but if that's the case, there really should be some sort of visual element to indicate/complement this type of "dragging" -- a page wipe, for one (crude) example. Oh wellsies.

^^^ I am in 100% agreement with you, it needs some sort of visual indication, like a page ripple animation

isn't this sort of touchscreen patented by apple?

I hope others will make Daps with 3inch screens I'm tired of my 2,5inch screen.

In looking at that picture again (ie chicks for free... ).. It looks like a set of perhaps (wireless bluetooth) headphones, hanging on the P2 box in the foreground.... any info on these? Samsung's? Anybody? Anybody?..... Buehler?

Yep, they're bluetooth headphones that are likely made by iLuv. I'm sure they will be selling these the same time they release the P2 over there. The included earbuds still are wired though I believe. The armband case is also made by iLuv

Im REALLY curious if this will be released in the Us anytime soon, they should market it like crazy (ohman would there be major hype, touch screen, gorgeous.. ahh) it would really work too lol. but if it does end up hear, Creative better wow me or im long gone on the YEPP train!

Where did you get that info from pivot? I've got two other Samsung players that both support OGG after FW upgrades but I want to make sure this will before I give it too much thought. 16GB version with OGG support would probably make it my next player.

Oh my god. I am completely in love. You know, I've always been a huge Creative fan.. but they're just disappointing me more and more lately. Samsung really knows what they're doing - and this product is amazing.

I hope they won't be a ridiculously expensive novelty item. If I could get one of these guys for $200, I'd be out there in a heartbeat.

EDIT: I'm with LostGirL--I'll take one of those booth girls. ;P
