Sony Reveals the NWZ-S610
comment: 27 | Thursday, August 30 (2007) 04:04AM | Posted by Michael
For those of you who were envious of Europeans for getting the NW-A800 series a few months ago, Sony has now officially announced it for US markets. For the rest of us who thought that player looked sub-par, there's a brand new model that looks much better. It's called the NWZ-S610, and will have many of the same features of its older brother

Features

  • Capacity: 2, 4, and 8GB's
  • Display: 1.8" QVGA LCD (320 x 240)
  • Audio: MP3, , WMA (and WMA-DRM), AAC (non-DRM)
  • Video: MPEG-4 and AVC Baseline (aka H.264) at 30fps
  • FM tuner
  • Battery Life: 33 hours for audio, 9.5 hours for video
  • Colors: Black, Silver, Red, and Pink

While the screen is a little smaller than the A800 (2.0" vs 1.8"), there are some added benefits in this new model. First and foremost, the S610 does not require you to use SonicStage. You can use WMP11 among other programs (it's an MTP device). Secondly, the player has removed support for ATRAC. I personally don't see the removal of a codec as a good thing, but maybe its absence will put Sony in a better light. Finally, they've added an FM tuner, and a bump in battery life for video (8 vs 9.5). The S610 will available in September at the following estimated prices: $120 for the 2GB, $160 for the 4GB, and $210 for the 8GB. The A810 will retail for approximately $20 more respectively.

Cnet Reviews the S610

Jasmine France over at Cnet already got her hands on this new Sony player and seemed thoroughly impressed. Here's the summary for her review:

The Good: The Sony NWZ-S610 series features a compact design with a high-quality feel and an ample screen. The user interface is intuitive, and there are plenty of features to choose from, such as an FM radio and photo and video playback. No more awful SonicStage software: this Walkman is a PlaysForSure device supporting subscription tracks as well as unprotected WMA, MP3, and even AAC files. The player offers good sound quality and an excellent rated battery life.

The Bad: The Sony NWZ-S610 doesn't offer any exceptional new technology, and there are cheaper competitors that offer the same features.

The Bottom line
: The Sony NWZ-S610 series Walkman doesn't bring anything striking or new to the table, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a quality MP3 player with nice extras and a killer battery life. Plus, Sony got rid of SonicStage--the best news ever.

Score: 7.7/10

Removing atrac will annoy some of their long term fanbase (especially those who shopped at the sony download place), getting rid of sonicstage is a definite good thing on the other hand.

Looks quite nice, other than the controls. Is this just for the US then?

It should be available in other markets as well. This was just from a US press release.

Sites such as engadget are rejoicing over the removal of ATRAC but I've always thought having a codec there isn't harming anything. It caused harm only when Sony was supporting ATRAC and nothing more. Now that they support MP3, WMA, and AAC, why not just keep ATRAC there too? It was SonicStage that truly gave Sony the bad rap in the DAP industry. So much so that people often group ATRAC in with it.

Yes, Sony don't make any sense anymore. Their hardware products are always brilliant, but let down by the software side of things, even when they try to do the right thing...

The benefits of being a global conglomarate I suppose (ironic here)

Thank god for Cowon.

I presume it is to do with WMP and the like not being capable of transferring the atrac files especially not the protected ones. Could also be a hardware issue with the chips used in these players.

Just reading about someone on ATRACLife who has 5,500 atrac files, I wouldn't want to have to change that lot.

Yeah you are right, just seen the european press release, players up for pre order from tomorrow.

Also "Sony will be phasing out the CONNECT (TM) Music Service based on Sony’s ATRAC audio format in Europe. Specific timing will vary by region depending on market demand, but will not be before March 2008." which isn't a surprise.

Ouch, well it would be good of Sony if all the songs purchased through that service could be given to the customers in mp3 or aac format... But I don't see that one happening, do you?

I just got this email from Sony regarding Connect (I had used the service a long time ago, after I got some free music codes):

Today Sony announced its intent to move to a Windows Media Technology platform for Walkman® products in the United States, Canada and Europe. We strongly believe that the decision to embrace a more open platform for these devices will enable us to provide you with a better overall experience. As a result of this change, we will be phasing out the CONNECT™ Music Service based on Sony's ATRAC audio format in North America and Europe. Specific timing will vary by region depending on market demand, but will not be before March 2008.
We are fully committed to helping you through this important transition away from the CONNECT Music Service and providing you with the best possible guidance on how to successfully transfer your music library to an MP3 or Windows Media-compatible format, should you wish to do so. We recommend that you use any outstanding promotional codes, account credits or gift certificates available in your music account prior to March 2008, but even after the store closes you will continue to be able to play, manage, and transfer the music in your SonicStage library and on your existing ATRAC devices. If you obtain a new device, all of Sony’s new Walkman music and video players will support MP3 or Windows Media Audio format.

Honestly, I had a felling this was coming.

they killed it when they released it, sony don't seem to get things right first time around. Blu ray is looking good, but for some reason I am waiting for sony to shoot themselves in the foot....

Took the review some time to get to the most important bit

"Sound quality for music was fine through the included headphones, but much better through a pair of Shure SE530s (any high-quality earphones should do the trick). The NWZ-S610 series offers nice, tight bass; rich, enveloping mids; and clear, sparkly highs--what more can you ask for, really?"

It's really the control layout that most people (including myself) didn't like. They just seemed a bit too cluttered, and unsymmetrical. The shape of the A800 was fine

Maybe they will add atrac if they see is needed latter on via a firmware support? I know TV host Jimmy Kimmle and ABC use(last I remember) Sony Connect to give you exclusive material not show on the show. I wonder what happened there. I like this player, and really want a Sony device, but since 16gig is out I yeah. Now only if this or better yet the NWA800 is 16gig and comes with an SD slot or even Sony Memory Stick, I can tell you it be more competitive.

The BIG question is, will these new Sony DAPs still gapless capable? In the past, they are gapless with Atrac only (S70x with AAC too). Now, there is no Sonicstage, so we don't know which AAC container/tags Sony is going to use (.3gp? .m4a? .mp4? iTunes' tag? Nero's tag?), let alone gapless capability. Hopefully somebody can determine this soon.

went to the sony store in nyc yesterday to take a look (i don't work too far from there) both the a810 and this one have excellent sound quality(based upon the preloaded tracks, tested with shure se210's) I think the a810 has an edge on the s610 in sound slightly but stomps on the 610 in regards to looks. Feature set is identical except for the radio on the 610 which is in my opinion the only reason to get the 610. (People still listen to the radio? lol) I'll be getting the 810 once direct deposit hits my account. funny, remember the days that sony would announce a dap and it wouldn't come out until months later....

The PC Magazine review implies you can search by folder: "The Music icon is next and is searchable by All Songs, Album, Artist, Genre, Release Year or Folder. The option button here offers a return to the Now Playing screen."

It would be great to get confirmation on this. Also on the gapless issue (someone on headfi said they didn't hear a gap between two Pink Floyd songs that were loaded on a demo unit).

I have the NWZ-S616F and it allows you to search by folder. Also, I don't see it mentioned here, but you can drag and drop files/folders via Explorer if you don't want to use WMP.

Honestly, I think I like this better than my Sansa e260. The sound quality is superior (it's part of the Walkman brand after all) and I love the interface.
