8gb iRiver Clix2 Finally Gets Stateside
comment: 23 | Tuesday, September 11 (2007) 12:45PM | Posted by Dominic
As of yesterday all you Americans can avail of the iRiver Clix2 from iRiver's online American store. It's a bit late in the day getting to the US given that the UK and Korea have been enjoy it for a while but at least you finally got it, and heck, they beat Cowon to the trigger (yeah, still waiting on the 8gb D2)

The 8gb Clix can be all yours for the rather hefty price of $240 ex delivery direct from the online store (linked below). It certainly is one of the better products available nowadays but with the Creative ZEN just around the corner packing more features for less money the price is a little hard to justify.

Exactly.

I'm pretty sure iriver was waiting for new ipods before releasing this. I think that the 8gb ipod touch at $299 is throwing off the price, which is too bad. There is no way that the clix or zen can compete with the touch. Also, if people want a touch, that's what they'll be getting. As such, I wish they would realize that their direct competition is the ipod nano, NOT the touch.

The clix2 is a beautiful player, and really deserves to be noticed. However, prices need to go down. 4GB for $149, 8GB for $199, and 16GB for $249-299. Hopefully iriver will realize this within the next few months. Pick one B&M retailer to show them off, and sell the rest online.

Edit: maybe they'd rather compete against non-Apple products such as Cowon or Creative's offerings, but I think the clix2 has a chance to renew the iriver name in the US if it were pushed out there for the holidays. The days where I would often see iriver flash or MP3 CD players on the street are long gone.

Actually, I would say their competition is the Creative Zen, SanDisk Sansa, Meizu M6, Insignia Pilot etc. People who want an iPod, will get an iPod (Nano or otherwise) without really looking at other players. It's people how don't want or like an iPod that will primarily look at other DAPs. At that point it comes down to price-performance-features. Most have similar features with various GUIs, the biggest difference being price. The older 8GB Sansa e280 is going for $120, the M6 is $150 the rest are $180-$200. No doubt, the Clix 2 is a great little unit (with the added bonus of the gaming feature) I just don't think it will be enought to get the majority of people to pony up the extra $40-$100 difference.

Oh yeah as stated previously, 16GB is the new 8GB...

On edit: estat I didn't mean to copy your post. I was composing as you were editing. Great minds must think alike

Tomorrow they announce a 16Gb version but it won't be available in the US for 6 months.

Wait a few months and we will see. When people realize that it is not comfortable watching a video with a screen stained by plenty of finger prints (they HAVE to touch the screen). Unless there is a way to touch the screen without scratching it or leaving finger prints.

This would have been a good time to release the W10, this 8GB clix is way too little and way too late.

I wont even go into the price point.

That being said, it is a nice little player.

sdsdv10, you sound like an Apple fanboy. If a product is better than I'll buy it, I'm not so insecure that I don't have to make sure I am purposely 'avoiding the crowd.'

iRiver's time to market (from announcement) in the US at least, is atrocious. To have any chance of competing with, what are quite compelling devices.. they have to be quicker than this.. and get their players back into B&M's.

I wonder why it takes so long for any of these things to reach the US... Anyways, Samsung and iriver shoud get to work on 16GB. I really don't see why Samsung wouldn't since they make most of the flash chips in the market anyways.

Breakdown, no fanboy here. Just noting that Apple's market share has remained relatively constant (generally >70%) for the past few years. This occurred while several manufactures have brought out competitive models with either more features, lower prices or both. In that same time Creative slipped from number 2 to number 4, Sandisk came from nowhere to number 2, and Samsung and Microsoft entered the top 5. Being a scientist whose job involves analyzing data, I surmise that remaining 20-30% of the market is just exchanging place (i.e. cannibalizing each others markets, not really taking market share from Apple). I further hypothesize that this means while some Apple customers are trying other products and vice verse, the vast majority are sticking with Apple regardless of what other manufactures are bringing to the table (meaning they never really look at the other DAPs). My comment is neither pro- or anti-Apple, just a statistical analysis of the market share data. This type of analysis has no way to describe each individual circumstance (such as yourself), nor does it consider the concept of "better" but views large number of people on the whole. If you have another explanation for why Apple has maintained its dominate market lead, I would be happy to hear it.

As said in the first comment, "too little, too late" and l will add too expensive. Maybe the extra 40 $ are for the free audio codec there!

Why not bringing the iRiver clix2 8GB when it was release to all the countries at the same time?

This would have been a good time to release the W10, this 8GB clix is way too little and way too late.

Maybe we will see a beautiful video demonstration of the W10 at CES 2008. It's only for shows!

PS. I'm sorry for my poor english, I'm french speaking. I know, it's not an excuse but I'mworking hard to improve.

Why on earth would you buy that instead of the new Apple beats me. Apple have again redefined the market (and I am not an Apple fanboy), so little pathetic attempts like this one are embarassing.

At the same time you can't just give 1GB now that Apple is taunting the 16gb flash.

These companies have to come up with radical changes if they are to survive, one of which is on the software/firmware front and get the community to help them fence off Apple (open source all the way - ie Linux is doing a lot better than IBM was at fighting MS market share).

Getting customers off Apple is hard and they won't do that by being second best.

A release six months ago at $50 less would have been right for this player. What was so hard about this? I really like iRiver's players, but their capacity has been too far behind and their pricing has been too high for years. And to finally pull this out right on the heels of announced 16GB Apple, Sandisk and Creative flash DAP's... It really is a shame iRiver can't get their act together, because they make a vastly superior product.

Ive had my U10 for 2 years now, and I have to say that iRiver players are just simply amazing. The clix2 is a great option for me, but unfortunately I am waiting for the W10. Hopefully it comes out for the holiday season this year. In Korea, iRiver has incredible brand recognition and status (compared to here in the states); so it is wrong to say that other companies aren't trying hard to create great players. iPod easily does this with nice prices due to Apple's massive amount of money. gotta give other companies credit for trying. The cycle simply repeats over and over; apple comes out with a product everybody raves over, other companies beat it without much recognition, apple comes out with another product that kills all of its reputation and starts the cycle all over again. so true =(.

If the 8GB clix was $199, I'd take that over the ipod nano 8GB any day. The extra $40 is hard to justify. However, as someone who has had extensive hands on time with both (4GB clix2 and new 8GB nano), I can say that nearly every aspect of the clix2 is superior. The nano just has a slightly smaller form factor.

Estat, I do agree when it comes to people like us who do some degree of research before buying a player. For the vast majority, unfortunatelly, there is no way to buy something else than the nano (size, design, coolness, sense of security...)

Sad fact of life

Does the Zen need Creative or Windows Media Player software to add playable music?

If so, then that extra $40 is worth it to me.

I think they are both MTP devices. Use WMP to sync, or use limited drag and drop functionality. The latter has issues sometimes.

I used to hate MTP and WMP, but it's steadily improved to the point where it is actually decent in WMP11 and with the Zen Vision models. There may be a way to flash a non-US FW to enable UMS. Some devices let you use either right out of the box.

UMS is not worth any extra money to me, I don't feel I should have to pay more for such a basic function. I use a mac so mtp is a no go anyway. I would much rather buy the Meizu M6 over the clix2 at it's current price. Having said that I do not want such little capacity, for me the capacity needs to be at al absolute minimum of 16gb flash otherwise a 2/4gb is more than enough for daily music switching.

I think you should all take a closer look to the product before posting all that "too little too late" nonsense... The clix2 surely adds up for those extra $40.. First it has AMoled screen which has no comparison to other DAPs screens... It's just magnificent.. I think the single screen pays for the extra $40 but you also get a better audio quality device (at least if compared to ipods), a customizable gui and the choice of choosing between UMS (No need of Itunes!! or w/e) and MTP... plus the coolness factor obviously.. I dunno where is the too little here..
