Best Buy Kicks-off the Insignia Kix
comment: 22 | Saturday, October 27 (2007) 09:11PM | Posted by Michael
Insignia isn't your typical "no-name" company that you'll find at your local electronics retailer. Best Buy's in-house brand has released a respectable array of players over the last two years. The latest is the Kix, a basic flash player with a built-in USB plug. The design breaks away from the the slim rectangular form-factor of previous players, and goes for a more sporty look and feel.

On the features side, there isn't anything particularly new about it. It has a 1.0" color screen, support for MP3, WMA, WAV, and Audible, and an FM tuner. It will run for approximately 30 hours from a lithium-ion battery, and will thankfully be a UMS/MSC device. The Kix also comes with 2 extra USB caps in various colors, for those that like to change it up every now and then. For now, the only capacity is 1GB, which retails for $59.99.

are you kidding me? with the new players(sport and pilot) and the old players being cheap(ns-dv and ns-da) online why would anyone buy this. I have a 2gb ns-dv and its pretty good but im getting a pilot eventually. This is a step BACK from the other stuff.

I donno, it has its place, and it should sell decently well. Hell, Id use it as a flash drive with benefits.

this look to be one of the few times where something looks both generic and not cheap/well made.

it has a real plain design, but it looks pretty clean and it could probably survive a couple 'kix'. (oh wow, i'm so funny)

Yeah, I'm a bit mixed about this one. I think people will buy it, because there aren't a ton of DAP's with built-in USB's in stores lately (only the Samsung YP-U3 and Sansa Express comes to mind) and the price is decent (10.00 cheaper would be perfect). I do think it looks a bit dated though. Like, if someone asked me blindly what year I thought this came out, I would have said 2002 or something. I wouldn't even be surprised if this turned out to be a rebranded player. It remnds me of something I've seen before.

It is not re-branded, it was a design that we did from scratch. The key thing you will find with the Industrial design is that it is one of the few players in which you cannot lose the cap on the player as it is hinged. Also, you will find very few players of it's size with such long battery life.

The Kix has got its place - if it sounds better than the competing bottom-feeder DAPs usually found on the market, though it looks nearly the same as its competitors. The hinged rubber USB cap does have its benefits.

Yeah, I am impressed with the battery life digital. Most players in this size get less than 15. I think I'll look at it a little bit differently once I see it with the color screen on and most certainly in person.

In the pictures, with the screen off it looks a bit generic. I'd actually suggest Best Buy take new pictures with the screen on. It makes a big difference in how appealing a player is.Nearly every single player on their website has the screen on in stock photos.

From the first time I seen it, it reminded me of something Rio would make. Like the rubberized part combined with the grey plastic build is kinda Karma-esque to me.

Great battery life for that sort of player..
Actually quite nice for the market that it is in. Howabout a slightly more up to date design and a slightly lower price. Likely gonna happen in the next iteration, like the NS-DV to the Pilot.

You agree though that this thing is not pretty. I'd think that at the lower end of storage capacity, a player's looks become much more important.

I'd think that the higher end of storage capacity, looks become much more important. Who cares if its a little ugly 1gb flash player? Everyone is looking at the incredibly expensive and styling iPhone/iTouch.

I'll split the difference with you two guys... looks are important on both ends of the pricing spectrum.... and this one ain't got it.

With due respect to Insignia which has a lot of things going for it, this effort should never have made it to the production stage and should be re-thought before too many make it to market.

...and yes, the batt life is quite decent.. but then again, it should be.

Some of you people baffle me.. Asking "Why would someone want a tiny little player" is like asking "Why would someone want a tiny little car.." Mileage, portability and durability. A tiny player is going to be able to survive a fall better than a larger flash based and definitely a hard drive based player.. It's for a more active user who doesn't mind syncing up more often..

I own 3 players- one tiny flash player for bicycling, one medium flash player for the gym, and one large 40gb HD player for playing through the radio in my car.

Each player has its niche.

I don't see why a tiny player would necessarily be more durable to be honest.

And I bike with my hard drive player.

Personally I'd only want a tiny player as back up if main player battery runs out. Used to have one but it broke in my work bag.

Try dropping a hard drive based player a few times while riding your bike.. More moving parts PLUS heavier weight make the fall more damaging to a hard drive based player. You have been lucky so far.

Yep it's been a lucky five years of biking five days a week, lol.

Personally I find it advisable not to drop my gadgets anyway.

Maybe I should rephrase.. Bicycling is probably ok with a HD based player- but jogging/running would really wear it out, and I guaranty you would not get 5 years from it in that case.

I gotta tell you guys, this thing flat out sucks. The buttons are tiny and hard to press, the screen is really only two colors, it takes forever to update a "playlist" every time you disconnect it from charging or from a computer, and it's WAY too expensive. If someone looks at this, I tell them not to get it and to get the Clip, since the Clip has twice the storage for the same price. Since this came out, we have not sold even one.
