Biggest Zune Fan wants to change his name to Microsoft Zune
comment: 38 | Monday, November 05 (2007) 03:39AM | Posted by Michael
I'm sure many of you have read about a Zune fan who shocked everyone when he decided to get a Zune tattoo. Most sites poked fun at him for getting his arm permanently inked with the Zune logo, but I didn't feel the need to do the same. I mean, if the tattoo made him happy then good for him. Well he wasn't completely satisfied since he got another two tattoos after that.. Will the madness end? It seems this fan has one more trick, and it's not up his sleeve. He plans to legally change his name to: Microsoft Zune.

My calendar reads November 5th, but this is the best April Fools Joke ever. I was fine with the first tattoo, and I barely raised an eyebrow when he added a couple more, but the name change is bordering on creepiness. It's one thing to be a fan, but it's another to be a human advertisement, especially when you're not even benefiting from it financially. I'm at a loss for words really, but here's my advice for this Zune extremist:
"You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind; a journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead - your next stop, the Twilight Zune!"

The sad part about this, he feels he is actually helping the Zune's brand. It's bad enough that the launch of the first Zune was a folly.

Maybe he should just change his last name to "Zune" and keep his normal first name? Then he might just get a date, fall in love, get married, and then _she_ can be MS. Zune?

@sitandstare
She'd have to divorce him and keep the last name. If she stayed married she'd be Mrs. Zune.

...and she can be called "Ms. Flash Zune"...never mind; that won't go over too well in mixed company
Talk about scarring your children for life "Yea, my dad changed his name to Microsoft Zune", thanks pop, now I am going to have my a** kicked and be ridiculed for the rest of my life"---a new iPod user in the making.

I find the most hilarity in the fact that the Zune isn't even that great, as most people on DAPreview will attest.

It would be one thing to want to change your name to Creative Zen Vision:M, Cowon A2, Rio Karma, or iriver Clix, but Microsoft Zune?? He does realize that his first name will be Microsoft, right?

Apparently the tattoos weren't enough for him.

What's next? A blow up Zune doll? I think he might have already passed that stage.

Talk about taking your 15 seconds of fame and stomping on it. Guy claims to be the biggest Zune fan goes out and does the unthinkable, gets a Zune tattoo. But wait he goes out and gets one, no two more Zune tat's. He gets invited to show of his tats at headquarters (Microsoft). You would think that's enough of a high for the craziest of fans but no! Now he wants to change his name to "Microsoft Zune". Must be something in that Ohio water.

The sad thing for this guy, is if he does go to Redmond to meet the MS Zune development team, they will shake his hand and give him thumbs up and kudos for being such a great Zune fan, but in the end; after he leaves, you know they will be saying WTF was that.
I am not stating this as a dig to this guy, just as a sad observation.

estat, Speak For Yourself...

I think the Zune 30 is one of the better DAP units on the market.

- Very Good Feature Set

- Very Good Video

- Great Sound Quality

- Gorgeous GUI/Interface

- Highly Scratch-Resistant Surfaces

I love all of my Zune players, and anticipate my Zune 80 (come 13 Nov) will only be better.

@DaHarder

It's a decent player, and definitely one of the better DAPs on the market. However, it's still lacking in quite a few areas IMO. Overall, I have always felt that the player is too much like an ipod with a slightly larger feature set. The GUI is awesome, but everything else is pretty mediocre IMO.

It would be ok if it had come out earlier than Nov 2006. However, at that time the Vision:M had already been out for over a year, iriver H320 had been out for two years, Rio Karma had been out for three years, and ipod was on its fifth year. The Zune seemed like too little, too late, instead of a natural progression and next-gen DAP.

In terms of functionality, it's feature set is quite a bit less than the Vision:M or Cowon A2. In terms of physical form/style, it is trashed by any iPod from the last 2 years, or the iriver clix2.

FYI, my favorite DAP of all time is the iriver H320 with Rockbox.

Edit: I guess ipod was on its sixth year, since it had been out for five years in late 2006.

Back on Topic:

As the owner of nearly 200 DAP/PMP units including 4 Microsoft Zune units, NEVER have I been so enamored of any of them that I would comptemplate changing my name to one of them.

If this is all in fun, then so be it, but understand that the changing of one's name to that of a trademarked product and/or service will prohibit one from using said name for commercial/monetary gain without expressed legal/written consent of the holder of said trademark

That means ANY interviews, publicity etc. that one might be asked to participate in would have to be Free Of Charge!

So tell me... What Is The Point of Doing Something Like This?

Unless said individual is simply so starved for attention/so socially inept, that this is some kind of last resort...

That is what I'm thinking. I understand he loves his Zune (and good for him that he has found an interest), but I think at this point, this has gone beyond any love of a particular DAP.
This is more a way of getting attention or other psychological issue (and again, this is not a negative connotation).

A bit off topic, but...

I actually had a Flash Zune encounter at the fashion Show Mall here in Las Vegas...

I was coming down the escalator, and saw a guy with a DAP in his had, and there it was... A Red Zune Flash.

He initially looked a bit startled when I asked him if he was on the Zune development team, but then went on to let me hold it, and toy with the (brilliant) new interface.

My biggest issues with it are that the black boarder around the screen really made the player look as though the original plan was it incorporate a larger LCD, but at the last minute MS got great deal on smaller ones and went with those instead.

Note: When first announced, MS did, in fact, claim the the LCD would occupy some 2/3 of the entire front surface of the DAP... Reality: Not So!

Another issue I have is that the use of shiny/polished metal for the back of the DAP is a serious step in the Wrong Direction for the Zune, as they're really little more than impractical finger-print/scratch magnets.

My third (and final issue) with the Zune flash is the price, US 150.00 - 200.00 is just far too much to ask these days for a mere 4gb and 8gb player, and I see those prices dropping rapidly after introduction, especially since SanDisk just introduced the View at 150.00/8gb and 200.00/16gb.

We'll all see soon enough...

Uh, no I don't think so. It's not a real license after all. Just an intentionally bad mockup I did for this post

I've only seen a few photos that he has posted, but I just went with this one. I did not want to search for more.
