Originally started as a wee personal project by ArchosFans member "Fiat" to have an SSH sever running on his 605, he has managed to hack the Archos' Linux based OS to gain root access, which I'm lead to believe can open up all sorts of possibilities for the Archos units... I don't really know myself because I'm too hung over to make comprehensible sense of what's been written on the archosfans forums.

The good news for end users is that you too can access your Archos 604/605/705's root thanks to the release of "Arcwelder". If you're into coding and the like, have an Archos unit and feel like expanding it's abilities then make sure to hit the link below, it'll take you straight to the arcwelder development thread at ArchosFans.

I nearly went down to my local pcworld to pick up an archos 605 but they're so much cheaper in the states...I may order one from there...if I do at all....

Rockin how does the 605's usb host work?it's a dock adapter right?could one attach a self powered usb HDD an play files from it?

After I heard about the spfid update I was interested again, the low volume output on the 404 is what really put me off it....

i have a mini-dock, and here's how it works:

you plug the external drive into the USB slot on the dock. it then allows you to copy files from the external drive to the 605

But you can't use the files unless they're copied over correct? that really sucks... I hope someone changes that...

you can play files that aren't copied! just tried it. i put a song on a USB stick and plugged that in, and it worked fine.

that's great news mate! It's unfortunate that you have to use an adapter, this may be enough to sway me to the A3, but i'm certainly more interested in the 605 now that hacking work is underway.

I doubt you would be disappointed with the 605 buddy.

Though if the Q5 was the same size as the 605 i probably would have got the Q5

The 605 is very nice. I think it gets an unnecessary bad rap at times. There is no perfect DAP or PMP
As for this story....it sure sounds cool, though I'm not sure what all of it means. I was following the thread and a lot of what written there went waaaay over my head. But I am excited about the possibilities.

Let me guess.. if you delete or corrupt/modify certain files wrong.. that's how you brick your Archos? Hehe... even motherboard makers are designing failsafe bios/backup features.. PMP makers would be best served to follow suit.

Well, it's only a matter of time.. someone's gonna put uTorrent (linux) or some other evil app on there and have a field-day.. Let the games begin!
