Hello Newman, Give me back my ZEN interface!

Newman's Brainstorming Session

Lead engineer: What should the interface look like on our A6 model?

Engineer 2: How about the iPhone?

Lead engineer: Nah! we've already put that on 18 of our players, I want to try something new.

Engineer 3: Zune 80?

Engineer 2: What? The one with the humongous font? Yeah, no thanks.

Engineer 4: Hey guys, we haven't exploited Creative's players yet, how about the ZEN interface?

Engineer 2: I like it! But won't we get in trouble for this?

Lead Engineer: We're in China silly!

Engineer 2: Oh Right. HAHAHAHA

I was just checking out PMP Today's article on Chinese company Newman's new players. They released a bunch of PMP's, but one in particular grabbed my attention. The main menu on their A6 is the very same found on the Creative ZEN. Pretty shameless, no? Even if it's just a copy and paste rendering that won't make it into production, I'm just sick and tired of seeing these companies get away with things like this.

Thanks, shiftis

I sure it's another high quality Chinese made media player.

Wonder if they managed to integrate the expansion card properly.

haha, well it's an HD player so probably no expansion. The funny thing is, when I report this at epiZENter I bet people will say "this is exactly what we want Creative to make!". I know I wouldn't mind it.

-4.3" display, 16 million colors
-capacities from 40 to 160GB
-AVI support
-TV-out

That touch interface is going to be painfull... Either use a touchscreen or tactile controls, no touch for me (Just getting tired of it).

I'm not surprised, this kind of things happen in the gaming industry a lot as well. The not creative joke was a good one though .

Why bother? It's just a promo pic. Newman won't take the time to actually copy Creative's UI, just use a variation of the system UI off the SOC or whatever. Besides, it's unlikely DAPreview's readership lives in any country where these will appear and, given Newman's product life cycle, they'll disappear just as quickly & quietly.

It's companies like this that give original companies like Meizu a bad name! ...hmmm ...yeeaahhh ...I take that back after further consideration.

Just it's sad, that companies like this, who obviously have the skill to make great PMPs or DAPs, would rather make knock-offs that fool few and piss off many. Originality is tough I guess.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery.. and quick profits.
Though, I'm not sure who in China buys this.. still gotta cost plenty and from my last recollection, people in China make fractions of our U.S. dollar per hour (for how long due to the imploding U.S. economy, who knows). Maybe I'm mistaken.. probably at least a small fraction of the Chinese economy is similar to U.S. such as Hong Kong (outside of HK, that is), maybe Guandong prov?

Rumors are that Creative will release a player in March..?

the player looks good,
by ethics it has no originality value, and they dont respect copyright, imho
