16GB Sony Walkman with Bluetooth Coming Soon?
comment: 33 | Tuesday, January 22 (2008) 05:00PM | Posted by Michael
The S610 and A810 series from Sony were among our favorite players released last year. They've even been awarded our Editor's Pick in our upcoming Best DAP of 2007 finale. The two players were a bit short on extras, but more than made up for it in the sound department. The lack of a 16GB model was also upsetting, but that's about to change. A new FCC leak shows a new Walkman series, the A820. It will come in three capacities: 4, 8, and 16GB's (yay!). It will also have built-in Bluetooth 2.0 which should allow for wireless file transfers from your computer, among other functions. At Sony's request, most of the juicy info, such as test photos, and the official manual won't be publicized for another 45 days. We'll make sure to update you when they show up.

Hmm, that's strange. The url was fine in between the link html brackets, but it doesn't redirect. I just put a direct link now instead:

I'm so in for one of these - 16gb!

My A818 is just a brilliant little DAP...

I wanna see what it looks like first :p

I hear so many good things about Sony DAPs here, I do have to say I am quite tempted, though they run a bit rich for my blood. I was considerng the NW-HD5 at one point though, so I guess they deserve another look-see.

I can't wait to see how they look like,probably not very different from the s610 and a810,but whatever.

Anyway, the post about this over engadget is just plain stupid, they should left the dap's news for the people who really knows what they are talking about, like dapreview.

had heard rumours about their 16gb player alright, although those rumours where more indicative of the new model being a slightly upgraded A81X...this news contradicts it slightly... and..it's news to me looking forward to what ever sony release anyway... man the A818 kicks donkey kong butt!

Sweet. I had been thinking of trying a Sony DAP, and 16GB would it even better, IMO......

This makes me very, very happy! My A818 is one of my favorite flash daps along with my D2. Now only if cowon could release the D3 Sony is really making strides since they dumped SS, their daps always did sound excellent, and with the recent price drop of the ps3 they seem semi coherent in their business decisions lately

I really hope one of Sony's next big moves is to get rid of their super-easy-to-identify NW-A1001000101010xxx.1 v.2 product names. It's just a shame to call their pretty devices like that. Great news anyway!

Do we want another Bean or Circ. Sony can't name things let them stick to their numbers.

Just call them Walkman 8 series(or some other number depending on the model) or something that would be pretty easy to remember.

Like bloodyscape says they have Walkman and they aren't going to get much more recognizable than that.

And Mylo is a crap name.

Actually these DAPs aren't really new for Sony in any way. The real revolution is of course getting rid of SonicStage. But daps themselves are just progressive evolution of their line. If you go back down their linage back to NW-A1000 and NW-HD series you will see the 'heritage' of the current NWZ series very easily and small steps taken from those models to the current. It's nice to have Sony came to their senses and try to be competitive. And damn.... I want a 16gb NWZ-Sxxx.. Maybe I can stick a 16gb microdrive into my NW-A1000.. but the thought of syncing 16gb of music via SonicStage is giving me the shakes.....

I recently bought the NWZ S610 and I'm wholly satisfied by it. It's only 2 GB, but at $85, I couldn't refuse.

So I would definitely recommend the new Sony Walkmans if you're looking for a DAP that is basic but very adequate.

Question:

How is the Sony NWZ-S610 'basic'...

With the exception of having a voice recorder exactly what DAP/Media Centric features is this DAP missing?

ogg for some, flac for others, more video codecs for some, and some can argue FM radio.

The NWZ-S61X has an FM tuner. The NWZ-A81X does not.......

For the average consumer, all that matters is WMA, AAC and MP3 support anyway, and all of the videos I encoded for my iPhone/Classic/View etc. work without a hitch on my Stony-Sony

Admittedly, I went for the A818 because it looked so much more elegant than it's smaller sibling.

Love This DAP!

I'd love to see a 16gb or higher version of the 900 series come over here...that looks like a gorgeous dap.

@DaHarder:

I don't mean basic in the sense that this player is bare-bones minimum. I was just trying to get the idea across that this player isn't bursting with features like other players like, say, the D2.

And yeah, I wanted the A81X more than the S61X especially because of the bolder design. But I bought the S61X on sheer impulse because I saw it and it was all that they had. And now, thinking back, I'm glad that I didn't get A81X because I enjoy the fact that the S61X has an FM tuner. Plus, albeit that the player is a bit fatter than the A81X, I like the symmetrical design a tad better.

But that's just me.

Either way you go, the Walkmans were built to satisfy.

Oh, and the battery isn't soldered in on the S61X, which is a huge plus for me.

It would be nice if the BT allowed one to remotely control the player from a cellular or view what's "now playing" on it.

But I doubt Sony will do such a straightforward thing.

straightforward thing? that doesn't sound straightforward at all to me.

if you want to control the player or see whats playing, why not grab the dap itself?

Man, that's some really rare occasion, but I think zip22 is right on this one.

@yaroukh:
I think you should rather buy a cell phone with 8GB built-in flash-memory than a dedicated DAP - one of the brand new SONYERICSSON oder NOKIA phones would do the trick for you yaroukh.

NOKIA N95 8GB Music Edition for example.

However, I'm desperately awaiting SONY's first 32GB DAP.
Man, I nearly bought a black SONY A818 with 8GB but 8GB's or even 16GB's is just not enough memory for me. (I own a Zen Vision:M 60GB Slim-Version)

zip22: BT-enabled devices should just be able to communicate between each other; if something is "accessible" wirelessly it should be controllable wirelessly;
also I believe BT-enabled DAPs should provide some kind of API that would allow paired BT-devices to control them, so that my mobile phone could pause the DAP when a call arrives etc.
and one day it will be something normal ofcourse, I'd like Sony to be a leader in this

nocomp: no, they won't do the trick for me because:
1) I'm used to Sony audio-quality
2) I'm used to Nokia cellular GUI
3) 8gb is not enough for me (that and one more thing related to id3-tags are two reasons that prevent me from buying NWZA)

if Sony will release 16gb NWZA, I'll strongly consider it anyways

yaroukh, the only thing you mentioned that seems remotely logical is that music could pause when a call comes in. other than that, i see no reason why all devices should be able to all communicate and be controlled wirelessly. it doesn't make sense to wirelessly control your dap from your phone. i highly doubt that one day this will be normal. one day, sony will stop producing stand alone daps and devote all of their efforts to their phones. maybe there will be a model available without the phone (like the ipod touch), but there is no reason to control a dap from a phone.

zip22: even the pause is enough; therefore I really don't think I need to make a list of more situations when it is good for BT-enabled device to be reachable by another BT-enabled device... it may sound weird to you (as I understand your arguing) but to me such a connectivity comes as VERY natural and seems to be perfectly legitimate requirement

you can doubt whatever you wish to, ofcourse, no offense

pausing is nothing compared to controls and a now playing screen. pausing doesn't even require the phone to be modified or updated in any way, the DAP can just be paired like a headset and pick up calls. all interactions between 2 devices that are both carried in a pocket seem unnatural to me. merge the devices if they are going to be interacting that much, don't waste the battery life and the security if they are not.
