Rumour: New Archos on the Way?
comment: 19 | Wednesday, July 02 (2008) 03:40PM | Posted by Dominic
The folks over at Pocket-lint.co.uk announced on their site that they have received an invitation to an Archos press event. According to them the invite states that there will be an "exciting announcement" at the event. Could this mean there are new Archos units on the way, possible ones touting 3G connectivity? It is certainly a possibility as it was roughly this time last year that we got wind of the Gen 5 Archos PMPs.

The event will be held on the 10th of July at an undisclosed “London location”, the announcement will be made by Tony Limrick, the UK's managing director of Archos. DAPreview have not been invited, I feel like the last guy picked for the football team. We’ll keep you posted guys.

could be worse, DAPreview. i was the last guy picked for the ultimate frisbee team. heh.

but i'm actually pretty excited about this announcement. I really enjoy my archos and have wanted to upgrade the capacity many times but have been waiting for something like this. hopefully they'll come out with something really neat.

Well I have a 504 now and the only thing I see myself getting out of this is the 604 wifi and 605's prices getting driven down maybe 20-40$. I'd drop 10gb or so if I had wifi and a bit slimmer a player.

I'd love this one. Possibly thinner, lighter, even better display, longer runtime and better odec support (from start )

Well they hold small meetings so maybe start a European sister site and next year will be luckier. Any way, as much as I wish the player was smaller its unlikely, thinner probably, but screen stays the same as they don't want to go less then 800x480 res. They are also apparently killing non-wifi players. They are staying competitive on high end players, but should keep some focus on the mainstream. And they could seriously use some design experts instead of just engineers.

I'm ow that actually likes the industrial design look.

But just me liking the design isn't going to make archos mainstream, so I agree they need actual designers.

They also need advertisement!

The only time I have seen an Archos product advertised is when it was shown on an electrical stores inventory on there advert

Nope can't say I have!

But still, only having ads in France isn't going to make them as successful as they should be!

last year I saw a couple small time internet ads and that's about it, but if you check out Dailymotion, they had a contest to make an Archos ad and the users there got some great talent, here's one I like http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3ogab_popcornteam-archos_ads

Advertise in the US - they make some pretty good players IMO. Just need to give em' some decent battery life - 4hrs on vids is CRAP, and audio life is mediocre at best. On the whole, as I've only played w/them in Circuit City, they seem really good to me. Didn't get 1 cause' of the batt issue (once again, an issue for ME!!!).

I love the Archos lineup and the "industrial" looking design. I don't need some overly shiny shiny device, I like the squared edges and bulky form. Anyway, they play videos damnded well and have a ton of features, but yeah.

On my wish list are VOIP, preferablly skype.. and a lower price tag!
Sure, a tall order.. but not impossible. I don't want 3g in 6th gen because that just means a higher price tag (if it's the ONLY option).

The zen xfi promises to be a good pmp as well & unfortunately, the Zen didn't really catch on as hoped. What does that leave left.. Cowon and Iriver? Maybe sony will save us from these 'almost there concepts' and put the last piece to the puzzle in... and make a PMP that is good at every listed feature (on par with the ipod touch at least)

I want the 605 without the buttons (to make the product smaller)

Better SQ even though 605 was mediocre i want zune quality!

Increased battery life.

I would buy it just with those alterations!

How late are they leaving this today?

Mind you unless they've actually got a decent sound quality and have vastly improved on battery life I'm only interested out of curiosity.

The 605 didn't offer enough for me to consider to upgrade my 604. Will be interesting to see what Gen 6 offers. In an ideal world I'd love a PMP with the video quality of my 604 and X-Fi sound quality from Creative.
