IFA 2008: Samsung rolling out the Q1
comment: 13 | Wednesday, August 27 (2008) 11:03AM | Posted by Michael
IFA doesn't start for another few days, but we already know what most of the major DAP companies will be showing off. Joining in with their Korean comrades, Samsung will be announcing the YP-Q1. It's a mid-range player with a 2.4" screen and a similar GUI to the P2. Unlike the P2 however, the Q1 will be using physical controls. They're diamond shaped and appear to be touch-sensitive.

The Q1 will come in 4, 8, and 16GB capacities and has great codec support including MP3, WMA, Ogg, FLAC, MPEG-4, and WMV. There's also an FM tuner with RDS support and Voice recorder built-in. Battery life is rated at 30 hours for audio and 4 hours for video. That's about all we know for now. The Q1 looks like a decent player, but it doesn't do a whole lot to separate itself from the other players in its range. We don't have the full spec list yet so we'll reserve judgment till we get it.

Maybe it's just me, but is Samsung copying Sony now? As to looks, this is not very attractive IMO.. average at best.. I'd much rather have one of the Sony's.

...and not being landscape orientation is a step backwards IMO. FLAC support is nice though.

No P2 replacement? =(

that's what I was thinking.

Although Im happy to see major DAP manufacturers coming out with new DAPs after a disappointing CES. IFA and September should be interesting

I'm very curious as to how the control scheme will work on this player, as it looks very decent! Not drop-dead gorgeous like the P2 or upcoming Cowon S9 and such, but thank goodness Samsung is starting to open up to more codec support+ flash memory...

Well, I can't say that I don't like this but I wouldn't buy it either. This does get me excited because it may show Samsung's future design trend for devices. I think a P3 that looks somewhat like this would be brilliant.

So which model does this replace the S3? Or the T10?

T10 I would think.

Reminds me more of Creative visually than Sony.

The capacity and codecs it supports is nice and a definite step in the right direction for Samsung.

Buttons, if implemented well.. can be a beautiful thing, however the P2 was well done as regards the right amount of buttons to compliment the touch interface. Creative has a near-disaster on their hands with the silly use of buttons on the Zen X-Fi.. I can't imagine who the hell made that decision, but it certainly was ill-conceived.

The P2's touch screen definitely needs work, I don't think there's much disagreement on that point.. and I love my P2, for what it is. Kudos to Sammy for the codec improvements and for the RDS addition... but this player was only half thought through I believe. Samsung's time would have been better spent on something else, as the Q1 will not do well for them.

Sheesh.. sorry for the rant, had to get that out of my system...

Samsung seems to be finding it tough to do something really innovative these days. I was expecting some wifi features, 3rd party apps, or maybe even a slimmed down design similar to ipod products.

However, ipods have gotten so thin, that they are becoming fire hazards if not manufactured properly. When you get 1500-3000mah of lithium ion battery in a small footprint & have manufacturing goofs.. that's a formula for disaster.

I actually kinda like the design but I want my next player to have a touchscreen.

Q1 just looks simple design and touchpad operating.
On the contrary, beautiful GUI and multi-codec (almost all formats possible) is excellent and long battery life (30hr) is also reliable . More over, it supports RDS radio (it seems to come firstly on DAP) and upgraded sound effect (DNSE3.0).
I'll try on it.
