The Samsung P3 picks up where the P2 left up, it has a 3.02009 is looking like a stellar year for flash PMP's with touscheens. One to keep on your radar is the YP-P3, which Samsung just made official. It looks to pick up right where the P2 left off, improving with a new haptic touchscreen, revamped interface, and a brushed aluminum body. Nothing shows off that new metal body better than that sexy new silver color.

Last time we saw the player, we were pretty impressed with it but the interface seemed a bit sluggish (using a beta FW). As you'll see in the video below, the interface looks a lot more responsive now.

Features:

  • Capacity: 4,8 and 16GB
  • Display and UI: 3.0" Haptic touchscreen (480 x 272), Flash-based UI with widget support
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, AAC, Ogg, and FLAC
  • Video: WMV9, MPEG-4, H.264 (480 x 272)
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • Built-in Speaker
  • FM Tuner/recorder, Voice recorder
  • Extras: Flash games, Text, and Dictionary
  • Battery Life: 30 hours for audio, 5 hours for Video
  • Dimensions: 52.7 x 102 x 9.9mm (96g)
  • Colors: Black or Silver

The P3 will begin shipping in Korea early January at the following prices: 239,000 Korean won (~$180US) for the 4GB, 279,000 won (~$211US) for the 8GB, and 329,000 won (~$248US) for the 16GB.

I'm not really feeling the P3 right now. The S9 is about $15 cheaper, has a 3.3" AMOLED display, better SQ, snappier UI, UCI, superior codec support, and a much larger battery life. Not saying that the P3 is a bad device by any means, I am still quite excited to try it. It just seems seriously shadowed by the Cowon. This is why Samsung should have released it when we had wanted them to.

Yeah I know how you feel. I'm torn between the S9 and the rumored Walkman touch. I think the S9's interface is sweet. I also like the P3's interface though as its really vibrant and I like the whole customization aspect of it.

Personally,

I find the design of the Samsung P3 far more appealing than the Cowon S9 for the following reasons:

1. The S9 simply looks feminine to me, with it's rounded back and cute little chrome lanyard hook.

2. I detest DAP/PMP unit with polished metal back plates, and the why I always 'bead blast' them to a satin (less fingerprint prone) finish.

3. The S9 simply looks to be rather thick in the middle, (possibly) considerably thicker than the Samsung P3.

Of course I'll still be buying the Cowon S9, along with the Samsung P3, but from a design standpoint, I much prefer the more masculine, durable, practical themes of the Samsung P3.

O/T but just to counter:

1. Your opinion and you're entitled to it.

2. The S9 also comes in the Titanium Black variant which does not have a polished metal back plate, so there's your problem solved.

3. At it's thickest point the S9 is 12.7mm

I'm not liking the P3 so far, the touchscreen still looks quite hit and miss, much like some of Samsungs touchscreen phones. I'm really not liking the design, it could be one of those players that looks better in person, but the double border (black around the screen and then metal border of the frame) is not appealing to me...I also can't say I like that "yepp" logo...or the button placement.

Hopefully I'll be reading good things about the P3 in the future, but right now, i'm not feeling it at all.

Note: The YEPP logo will not be present on the U.S. version.

You make good points, but I still think it (the S9) looks too feminine for my taste... though that won't stop me from buying it, and butching it up accordingly

What are the chances this will come in a 32 gb model down the road? Did the P2 have a 32 gb model? i dont think so right?

About the design - I think that the P2 had a nicer scheme. I like the glossy black, it looked more high-tech. This reminds me when they changed the ipod nano to aluminum from the plastic.

I believe GMP3 references a 32GB model in their article so I think we'll see one sometime down the line. It just seems like an inevitable thing to me.

docpar,

Either mask-off the entire player (leaving only the undesirable chrome parts exposed), or dissassemble the entire player, and bead (not sand!) blast the parts to a satin finish.

From there you can either clear coat (if you live n a high humidity area and still want a metal-looking finish), or paint it whatever color you desire.

That's It!

It seems to me that the S9, P3 and the new Sony have a heck of a lot more in common than they have differences. Also, as two of these have not even been released yet, it seems unclear how attributes like sound quality and UI responsiveness could be debated yet.

A person's ultimate buying decision if choosing between these three models will probably come down to their personal preferences for the small touches of each one; the "fit and finish" if you will. Maybe it's the cell phone integration or haptic feedback of the P3, the tilt sensing of the S9, the noise cancelling of the Sony, etc.

It's doubtful a case will be able to be made that any one is *objectively* better or worse than the other; it'll be purchaser-specific reasons. There was another debate in one of the articles here about whether wifi was required for DAPs nowadays. For many of us it is not; however one person mentioned they're living on a wifi-enabled campus - in that person's *particular* circumstances, it obviously is highly useful. Me, I really like a DAP with a microphone and speaker as I'm often using voice recording/playback at my job and other places and that lets me only have one item in my pockets. As someone who can program, any DAP that has an open system or can run flash files opens the possibility of writing my own software for it (I have dreams of creating a handicapping tool for a dap that I can bring to the racetrack). For other people, these are obviously not issues.

Therefore, in the spirit of the season and the first paragraph of this article, we should all be happy that there are so many fascinating choices coming up in the new year, and not arguing whether 0.3" of extra screen obviously trumps chrome backs, or the number of hours of battery life FLAC playback is worth, etc. Just be happy that your only DAP isn't the craptastic 2GB Latte Ice, like mine is.

Doesn't the article say that the P3 will be released this January in South Korea?

Alcalde, OT I know, but what racing do you do?

@DaHarder, if you're referring to the thing at the top for the "lanyard hook", it's the play/pause button, I don't think it doubles as a lanyard hook.

Saijin, I wasn't referring to myself doing any racing. When I wrote "I have dreams of creating a handicapping tool for a dap that I can bring to the racetrack", I was referring to thoroughbred horse racing. As a fellow New Jerseyite, I'll add that I specifically meant Monmouth Park racetrack at the Jersey Shore.

I just think it would be nifty if there were a program (flash-based or otherwise) one could run on a DAP that would be able to do calculations regarding probable payoffs, odds, speed figures, keep track of your bets, etc. I think it would make more economical sense than having a separate programmable calculator, and notebooks are rather large and stealable to carry around for a few hours at a track and overkill computation-wise. Probably a tiny market for a DAP-based handicapping-helper, but if I ever did make one I'd give it away anyway.
