CES 2009:Samsung MBP200 Pico - A Pocket projector and DAP in one
comment: 17 | Thursday, January 08 (2009) 03:29AM | Posted by Michael
There are some products that you just know are going to become really popular in the future. I felt that way about netbooks two years ago, and now nearly every tech company seems to be making their own. Believe it or not, I have that same feeling about pocket projectors. I mean, how cool would it be to pull out your phone or DAP and start playing your files on a larger screen wherever you are? That concept seems so "futuristic" to me, but this is present day technology and Samsung is doing it right. They just announced the MBP200 Pico, a pocket projector that doubles as a DAP.

Samsung is certainly taking convergence to the next level it seems. Though small, the projector has the ability to scale to a viewing area of 50 feet. The device has a very small factor that's reminiscent of previous Samsung DAP's, like the YP-K5. It supports a wide array of audio and video formats, and has a built-in file viewer with support for the most popular presentation formats (Powerpoint, Excel, etc..). See the full specs below:

Features

  • Projection Panel: HVGA (480 x 320)
  • LCD: 2.2” QVGA(320 x 240)
  • Storage: microSD slot (up to 16 GB)
  • Picture Viewer: JPEG, GIF, Animated GIF, MBP
  • Audio Playback: MP3, WMA, OGG, AAC, WAV
  • Video Playback: DivX, Xvid, WMV9 Simple Profile, MPEG-2, MPEG-4;
  • File Viewer: Adobe PDF (.pdf), MS PowerPoint (.ppt), MS Word (.doc), MS Excel (.xls), Text (.txt)
  • DMB support in Korea
  • Size/Weight: 107.3 x 48.8 x 19 mm / 160 g

When I see things like this, I think back to scenes from Star Wars and other Sci-Fi movies. Those films expanded my imagination of what was possible as a kid, and I'm glad I'm able to see some of that technology becoming a reality. Next up: hover cars and lightsabers!

I am assuming this only limited to 16gb because that is the max microsd cards are right now?

Picture of it in action, I like that they've put the UI on the projection too.

That's nifty..but it could really do with having USB host...still very cool and we might just have to invest in one of these mike...maybe

looks cool, pity about the storage though:

by that video it seems that the icons aren't actually being projected..

A bluetooth remote would be nice to advance slides or as stated some kind of usb support to add a USB remote.

Now if I could just finish my Death Star....

That has been on my wish-list for a dap since god was a lad.

Well done Samsung!

Additionally:

I can't help but think how nice it would be to have something like this for military deployments. Tent city seldom has desirable entertainment, and a bunch of people gathered around a laptop gets pretty old, pretty fast. Something like this would be ideal for sharing movies, photos and the like during times when we all just want to think about something other than being away from our homes and families.

Daharder wouldn't the only thing be missing from this be a built in loud speaker or some compact speaker attachment?

Some kind of self-powered speaker setup would be most practical for something this small.

Including an audio amplifier powerful enough to drive larger speakers in such a small enclosure would probably produce a bit too much heat.

I assumed that part in the middle (between controls and screen) was a built-in speaker. Those look like speaker grilles to me, but maybe it's just a design.

Wow... this would be amazing to own. I watch alot of video podcasts and video before I sleep on my iPod Touch and this would AMAZING to have...especially since I watch the videos in a dark room anyways.

Just the thought of watching my videos on a 46'' projected image on my ceiling... AWESOME! Do we have any hints on pricing and availability in Canada?

I'm also thinking that using the projector feature would be hell on battery life...

I was watching G4 and I think they said it'll only get like 1.5 hours of projection time. Maybe I misheard them though as I just had the TV on in the background. Well I hope I did.

If your using the projector at home, you could plug the pico into the AC but otherwise I suppose 1.5hrs is a good start, it's not like you'll be using the projector on the bus/train....or will you
