Slacker Radio now on Blackberry, Coming soon to iPhones
comment: 13 | Thursday, January 08 (2009) 01:07PM | Posted by Michael
Slacker Radio is going mobile! Well technically it already went mobile with the Slacker Portable, but now you can get that same service on mobile phone devices. Slacker has just announced a new partnership that brings their radio service to Blackberry.

This application will allow you to stream & cache stations on your Blackberry phone (external MicroSD card required for cache) and have it act just like the desktop software or their G1/G2 portables. Best of all, the basic service is completely free and allows you to listen to over 100 radio stations, or create your own custom station. Check out the features below:

Slacker Mobile for BlackBerry smartphones offers
:

  • Free music library featuring millions of songs
  • High-quality stereo playback from cached stations and all streaming wireless connections
  • Over 100 professionally programmed genre stations
  • Create custom artist stations
  • Station caching for music playback anywhere, greatly improved battery life and accelerated application performance
  • Multi-tasking: listen to music while doing email
  • View artist biographies and photos
  • View album art and reviews
  • "Peek Ahead" artist and album preview
  • Pause and skip songs
  • Rate songs as favorites
  • Ban songs and artists you don't like

Slacker just got way cooler in my book for providing this service for free. They're also planning a Slacker App for iPhones which should have the same functionality as the Blackberry version. No word on whether that will be free as well. Click the link below to download the Apps.

Really! Anything that makes the service more and more viable is alright with me!

I wonder if they'll eventually get out of the hardware end altogether and just look to be a service provider. I'm really digging the stations and selection, so far. If they can get rid of the overhead costs of hardware production and concentrate on being an alternative to sat radio--I think they'd be onto a great business model.

Now...about Slacker Mobile for the Dare....

Why make it phone specific? Make a J2ME or FlashLite application and it should be compatible with near every phone and service out there.

Good point! I think if they made the service more widely available/compatible, they'd be able to carve out one hell of a market. The ability to create more customized stations alone makes Slacker's service potentially more valuable than sat radio.

except saijin I don't think the iphone supports flashlite. Not to mention not all windows mobile users are using flashlite because they have flash on their phone either cause the software they use requires it, or its been cooked into their rom.

That may be true bloody, but I mean, cover the target platforms (blackberry/iphone) first and then, as I said, Flaslite/ J2ME should take care of every other phone that has a web-browser and application support. J2ME is the de-facto standard for mobile phones.

I'm assuming they got some sort of financial deal from working out the partnership with Blackberry/RIM.

Been disappointed than Pandora doesn't work on Verizon wireless. I prefer pandora to slacker, but am downloding the app onto my Blackberry now. Will this replace my ipod?

You tell us I still must wait for a Flashlite or J2ME application, my phone is a rather pedestrian Samsung a737. I do however, have a J2ME XM/Sirius radio application which is sweet because I can use my parents XM subscription on it

jaw2ek, the only question I would have would be sound Q. Decent quality files will still sound crap if the hardware isn't up to snuff. Please let us know what you think about it.

I know for WM a few XDA guys made a Pandora app, and i would bet it would take them a few days before demand for this increases and they make this software for WM devices.

I talked with Slacker support today and they said that they are not sure how much further they are going to take their Mobile development, but that a J2ME Slacker app for web-enabled phones did not sound too out of the realm of possibilities and will be passed on to the technical team to evaluate. So basically, I got a non-committal answer but we shall see.
