Teclast M50HD is built like a Tank, literally

Teclast has just announced their latest PMP called the M50HD. The Press release talked more about the design of the player, rather than its features. Teclast claims the M50HD is made with a military-grade Zinc-Magnesium alloy, capable of withstanding higher temperatures and pressure. Even the screen is toughened up with a "super tempered" Polysilicon glass panel.

The M50HD has a funky retro interface from the looks of it. As the HD suffix suggests, it supports 720P high definition video. That's kind of useless since it's 4.3" screen maxes out at a 800 x 480 resolution. Thankfully there is TV-out support. It supports the same formats as other MP4 players nowadays, including FLAC, RM, Xvid and Divx. We all want our gadgets to be tough, but this seems like overkill. Perhaps they're building these for their national army or something.

Sweet! Teclast is one of a few actual DAP makers in China that does a good job with quality.

DaHarder may not agree with you : P

He's gone through hell with some of Teclast's firmware apparently. I'm not sure how he feels about hardware quality though.

I think they make some of the nicer looking "MP4" players and their GUI's usually look pretty nice too. I've yet to use one though.

Yeah, their FW is usually very low. But among Chinese DAPs, the ones I've used, Teclast seems to be in the upper tier.

It's not useless, it removes any need for converting videos.

This player is the latest in a string of releases from different manufacturers all using the same platform: it's a new processor called the ChinaChip 1600 + a Cirrus Logic CS42152 codec handling the audio. So far, Ainol, Onda, Gemei, now Teclast, and I think a couple of other minor brands no one pays much attention to have all released essentially the same player in different clothes. Literally. The home screen on all these players is usually customized but once you're into the submenus they all start to look pretty much the same. Becuase they are: inside it's the same PCB with the same hardware. They all use the same 4.3" 800x480 LTPS 16m color screen as well, although Teclast seems to have found a OEM that adds a tough outer coating.

The same platform has also been expanded to include a 5.0" screen version (coming to market now) and a 7.0" screen coming soon. Expect to see some, if not all, of the above manufacturers coming out with those.

The Teclast does get bonus points for high-quality build, which seems to be a minor theme developing in China. RAmos is releasing a beautifully made touchscreen player called the T9 (Link) and SmartQ is coming out with a MID called the SmartQ 5 (Link) that looks similarly well made...looks a lot like the T9, in fact and uses a similar, hard-wearing screen to the Teclast above.

The ChinaChip is really quite powerful, but take the whole "HD" thing with a grain of salt. Still, it'll play just about anything you throw at it and look great on that high-res screen. The bugaboo, of course, is when you buy any of these competing players you get bone-stock, crappy looking firmware straight from the ODM and -cross your fingers & pray- you hopefully get updates from the licensed brands.
