Surprise! The Cowon D2+ is here.

Cowon is notorious for keeping secrets and once again, they have kept the details on the D2+ completely secret from us. The D2+ is an upgraded D2 and will be released on the 24th. The big difference is the upgrade to BBE+ that's used in the S9 and a refresh in design/color that's very "iriver". There are 2 versions like before, one with T-DMB and one without. The addition of DMB will cost an extra $40 like the Cowon S9.

I like the black color engadget showed on their site.

The silver and black both look great.

I was perversely relieved to see that they didn't do a major update or a capacity update (32GB) because it would make my wait for a 32GB S9 that much more difficult if there was a hot new D2 competing with it....

Not a big difference, but I do like the new black and silver colors. The UI looks a little different too.

I'm wondering if the display has been updated with the same kind as the iPhone and S9.

^What do you mean? Capacitive? If so, the D2 still has resistive.

Sorry about not understanding the specifics about display tech. All I know is thie one I have is a soft touch...the surface flexes rather easily...and the iPhone version is solid feeling...it feels like glass.

^ Ya, the "soft" one is resistive.

The iPod/S9/P2 have capacitive displays which don't have any flex. They sense your fingers' absorbing electrical current that runs through the touch panel.

The resistive displays on D2 have 2 films that are electrically conductive and sense when you push the display and make those 2 films touch.

Nothing wrong with the new colours, but surely this was the time to release a 32gb model?

Maybe SarahV's comment explains it. Perhaps they don't want lessen the impact of the 32gb S9, but the longer we have to wait for that the less of an impact it will have anyway.

Big waste of time on this update imo. Seriously they added...BBE+? And some colors? Why bother.

I tend to agree with this. I can't see any rationalization to updating what they did. I personally prefer the old looks with the nice chrome COWON emblem and the flat surface versus the new angled surface.

The colors are very nice but I would have preferred a capacitive display instead.

akihabara news is saying that it also has improved battery life and screen(I wish), I'm doubting the accuracy of the post though as Cowon's site doesn't back this up at all.

I'm fully in love with the new black model and like the new placement of the logo, it looks good/balanced and shows Cowon is starting to move with the times and care more about design.

I know I'm harping and old tune here...BUTTTT....if they'd even given the D2+ the ability to tv-out unconverted video files then i'd pick one up in a heartbeat. I'd buy over an s9 because of the SD-slot.

@LL: given the small size of the screen, I'm not sure a capacitive screen would be all that much benefit for the additional cost, especially as it would render the stylus useless.

Shoulda given it a capacity bump IMO.

Stylus? Hmmm...does this bugger come with a stylus? Wait...that little perch device is the stylus, right? I have never used that little device. I never thought to use it. The input quality for this screen is fine, I was merely wanting a hard surface screen. It gives me the feel of durability and quality.

Sigh... a disappointing update... they could've at least added a few codecs or made the screen bigger But I guess the original D2 was great already Cowon is playing it safe.

For the capacity upgrade, it's nice for a different look. Otherwise, no real update, and the hackers will have the BBE+ running on the D2 soon anyways. I need a 16gb model, so either the silver or black for me.

As for the stylus, it's totally unnecessary to use. I have big fingers and haven't used it once, even as a stand. It's a worthless extra, only included since some MAY wan't it.
