iriver P35 coming to the US this Fall
comment: 7 | Tuesday, May 26 (2009) 12:24PM | Posted by Michael

I don't visit iriver's US page often, but I'm sure glad I did today. I just found a teaser banner, indicating the arrival of the P35 in the US this Fall. The P35 was originally thought to be exclusive to Korea, due in part to the players' built-in DMB tuner. We soon found out that there are actually three different versions sold in Korea, including a Basic, WiFi, and a DMB variation. I'm not sure why we have to wait so long, but from what I've read about this PMP, it'll be worth the wait. We'll do our best to secure more information from the often tight-lipped folks at iriver America.

Wow, that was unexpected. I'm guessing they'll be releasing the Wi-Fi version minus the dmb and Korean content delivery services. I really hope iriver puts some effort into the American webiste though... it looks horrendous.

I still think it's lovely, pity no 32gb version.

I still fail to see the point of a screen that size that's such a low resolution.

Hahahaha, i read the very last line of specs wrong..

I thought you wrote:

US Release: FAIL

------------------

Screen res is low to keep costs low, unlike phone manufacturers iriver will only get a once off payment of what they are charging (can't be subsidised), they can't afford to put in a nice high res screen while keeping costs down. The res on offer is more than adequate for standard res videos, anything higher and this thing would be priced higher than most of us are willing to pay.

looks like a hefty little bugger, don't it?

Phone manufacturers only get a one-off payment for their goods as well.
The network/retailer purchases the phone off of the manufacturer at x price, then sells it on however they want - be it spread out across the length of a contract, as a PAYG handset or even SIM-free.

As far as I'm aware, the only exception to that might be Apple.

At 4.3", that screen's about .5" larger than my Touch HD's and it's a quarter of the resolution (edit: or compared to the Diamond2, it's something like 1" larger and still a quarter of the number of pixels).

Ok, I'm aware that WVGA is an unusually high resolution but WQVGA is still pretty low
HVGA and this new 640x360 16:9 deal are both quite common in phones (including the relatively-modestly-priced Nokia 5800) - so I for one feel that iRiver have gone too far in their cost-cutting.
