Archos announces new UMPC, Notebooks, and oh a new touchscreen DAP too

It looks like the rumors of an Archos event on June 11th were true. Earlier today Archos their newest lineup of products. I was naive to think we'd see an array of new PMP's, but it seems those days are over. Archos has transformed into a computer company that happens to sell MP3 players. Here's a run-down of what was announced:

Archos 3

We don't have the full specs on this player yet, but we know it has a 3.0" touchscreen, a built-in accelerometer, extras like a voice recorder, stopwatch and calendar, and a battery life of 14 hours. It also uses a "virtual wheel" for navigating. Only an 8GB model was mentioned, for a price of 100 Euros (which likely means 100US). Considering the last player Archos released was a rebrand, I wouldn't be surprised if this one is as well.

Update: Archos also announced two more players that we don't have any pictures of yet. First there's an iPod shuffle competitor called the "Clipper". As the name implies it should have a built-in clip, and of course no screen. Second there's the Archos 2 Vision, which seems to be a slider version of the Archos 2. We'll update this article with more information as it become available

Archos 9

The Archos 9 is a UMPC tablet PC running Windows 7. It uses an Intel Atom Z515 processor, has an 80GB HDD, Bluetooth, and two DVB-T antennas built-in

Archos 10s, 13, and Satchel

The Archos 10s has a 10.2" display, uses a 1.6GHZ Intel Atom processor, has an 80GB HDD, 1GB of RAM, and runs Win XP. The Archos 13 is an ultraportable notebook, featuring a 13.2" LED display, a 120GB HDD and a 10-cell battery. Finally there's the "Satchel", a computer designed for children (as the giant blue handle would indicate). It has a 9" display, 1GB of ram, an SD card slot, webcam, and is running Win XP.

While I'm not surprised that Archos has gone in this direction, it does make me sad to realize the good old days of Archos PMP's are behind us. Sadly no Android devices were announced, but

"battery life of 14 hours"

Why Archos why?

Looks quite nice, but even at that price bit lacking.

The 9 looks interesting but wonder if the price will ruin it.

Love the look of the 13

The 13in does not look bad at all, but once the the prices on the Samsung X360 goes down under 1k usd again, that should be a much better value than this as that is using C2D low voltage cpu. Then again this would have a hard time competing against the MSI u200, X320 and Acer Timeline.

The tablet is nice but kind of pointless? Their 3in dap also seems pretty lacking specially when compared to its competitors, which have more features, and most importantly better battery life. The least and easiest thing Archos could have done imho was make this like the Gen 5 device spec wise and such but in a 3-3.3in flash based device.

Yeah, I was hoping for a more substantial iPod touch competitor with WiFi web browsing, and so on. The Archos 3 just seems pretty basic (which is what leads me to believe it's a rebrand).

Wow, now I'm really glad I didn't help my 21yo son get an Archos 5, as support & FW updates are/will be nonexistent. I was so hoping they'd pull themselves out of the mud,..... but I guess not.

And that Chinese OEM 14hr crap dap is the nail in the coffin. This is what they've come to, re-brands, and low quality at that.

(OOPS - originally said Archos 7, needed to correct that)

For heaven's sake...Will somebody please make a serious iPod touch competitor with Wi-Fi, web browser, useful apps, lossless audio support and decent capacity! FYI I'm an iPhone/iPod owner. There's just no substitute:)

the 13 isn't really a full fledged laptop, its an utraportable like the Air, Adamo, etc

maybe the Archos 3 runs android, the UI in the OS is pretty customizable but I wouldn't be surprised if it is a cheap rebrand either

as for them against the ZuneHD, I think Archos would have done better if they had better software, obviously that's Microsoft and Apple's strong points, but still as a relatively small company they were able to make some impressive hardware with features iPods and Zunes still don't have

Except the 13in is using a slower cpu like the Acer Timeline.

Archos is turning into a newbish company. That does not look good for them. Also that tablet I am 99% sure is a rebrand of some cheap one.

duck, I was just contrasting it with the netbooks they've released. I don't know how many different classifications there are in the notebook industry really. I'll update the post

I saw the video of the tablet, and it looks ok. Someone asked about battery life, and they tried to skirt the issue. But, if you listen closely, you can hear them say 3hrs. Blah,......what a waste. Archos is dead - DOA!!!

PS: THE OS on it is Windows 7: [Linky]

I guess 3 hours is okay? There are netbooks get what 3 hours of life, and those are larger, which one could assume they would have more space for a larger battery? Anyone know what the other atom based tablets get on battery life for comparison sake?

The way archos abandons support of their products and move on to new ones is alarming, they did this with the 605, it's usable but still with massive bugs in the FW and poor battery life, their doing it again with their Archos 5 Media units.. I would never buy another Archos prduct
