Creative's first Touchscreen player leaked
comment: 23 | Tuesday, July 07 (2009) 08:41AM | Posted by Michael

It's not easy being an editor of a Creative fansite. I see other companies like Cowon and Samsung making sweet touchscreen devices, while Creative puts out things like the...Zen Moo. Perhaps now we have something to get a little excited about. A recent FCC report was leaked, revealing an upcoming touchscreen player called the "Zii", as well as a developer model called the "Zii Egg". As many of you know, the Zii is a powerful processing chip that Creative hyped a few months ago.

The mock-ups above look pretty similar to the back of an iPhone, but there's not much else to go on. So far we know the device will have built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and will be equipped with an HD camera. It's possible that the Zii/Zii Egg will be running on Android as Creative showed off a tech demo of the Zii chip playing HD video on Android at the Mobile World Congress back in February. It's nice to see Creative finally catching up, but I just wonder if it's too late. The Zii Touch will have to be amazing to compete with other upcoming players like the Zune HD. If the past is any indication, we may see this player announced some time in August.

Not going to get excited...just waiting to see how Creative screw this one up...I hope they don't, but my confidence in the company has never been lower.

Well, after that quiz, I think this'll be an iPhone-clone. I hope for the best, and i'd love to see something that can compete w/the Touch, Zune HD, X1000, or even the S9 & P3.

I mean, really, they used to be innovators - WTF happened to them?

What happened to them was several years of putting out the same product, or variations of it, that no one wanted. Think How successfull they might have been, if they put out a true successor to the Zen M.

I agree Scarpad. They were on the right track with the ZVM. It played all my video files without conversions and had a beautiful interface. It's ironic they didn't try to put out variations of the ZVM like they did with nearly every other player.

Yes yes yes yes! Got caught in the pouring rain and now I come home to this news to make it all better! The only disappointment is that now I won't be making the first Zii-and-Linux-based DAP. This'll probably have 2 billion by one billion resolution (or close to it - check out this clip for a single Zii chip powering 4 720p displays) and ten million hours of battery life.

Sweet Seo Taiji! Check out the FCC document called FCC Test Report, pages 8-12! Am I reading this right... does the Zii have HDMI output?!? Damn, they practically lifted the specs I posted here a few days ago for my own Zii design!!ohno But that just saves me the trouble of doing it myself.

Ok, in the video clip I linked to the Zen was connected via HDMI, so it looks like it'll be able to drive the next-gen video glasses.

Hmm... Zen Moo... Zii Egg... maybe we haven't heard much from Creative lately because they moved to a farm! We'll know for sure if their next product is a Creative Hen Mow-hay-ic.

Once the Zii is released....

* This site will have to change its URL to nomoreDAPReviews.net. What could a review of a DAP contain from now on except "Not a Zii. Next."?

* DF will have to find a new vocation. You can't surpass a perfect DAP design. I predict he turns to designing Samsung cars and Seo Taiji album covers.

* Steve Jobs' new health threat will be severe depression.

* The Chinese economy will collapse due to the fact that it's impossible to knock off a Zii without Zii chips.

* Meizu will try, though... releasing mock-up photos of their "Z8" for the next 88 years.

* Upon purchasing a Zii, DaHarder will dispose of the rest of his DAP collection.

* it will be lumped in with the new model touch and the zune HD, some features may stand out for each device but none will be too far out of reach of the others, the ipod will continue to outsell them both despite rampant snarling here and elsewhere, creative may receive a slight boost from making a product that actually competes with the latest tech and will hopefully live to fight another day (competition is a good thing and apple hasn't had much recently).

the zii SoC is not that special, namely when compared to the tegra.

on topic, i'm excited for this player. not that i will buy it, but just to see what creative's been up to. hope it has a REALLY nice interface.

Who cares about UI when this device will be inexpensive, have WiFi, BT, and Android OS. Android is the next Rockbox to me...

Ricardo gets the vision! Don't forget battery life... Zii is supposed to use 300 mw or less for decoding HD video. It also looks like there's a card slot in the picture, but of course we can't be sure. It would be awesome to be able to run ScummVM or Dosbox under Android and be able to play older games like Monkey Island or such on the Zii. Based on Creative's questionaire and the developer model shown, it's a given that the Zii is going to be able to run apps and yes, be quite modifiable. Since Android is open source, in theory the Zii EGG (what were they thinking with that name?) will be able to have its life extended for quite some time. You should be able to add new codecs to the system, among other things. I just read that Android is somewhat non-standard, which makes directly installing pre-existing Linux apps a no-no, but still....

Wait... maybe I get the name now... we fans can be known as EGG Heads! Maybe there's going to be a marketing tie-in with newegg.com as well.

mintpad2,......hmmmm,.............

Now, this is really becoming entertaining. And alcade, I'm loving the "creativ"ity, never loose it!!!!

DF, if you were designing a Ziintpad2, there'd be no contest. The mintpad is really an amazing piece of tech. Being a bit older, it's more amazing when I think back to some of the first hand-held devices I ever saw. Of course, I was also unconvinced this newfangled thing called a "mouse" would catch on when I first saw one. But in my defense, it was controlling Windows 1.0 which probably tainted my judgement!

They're big on the Mintpad at pocketables.net and were also wondering on June 29th whether a price drop was a sign that progress was being made on the Mintpad2. Given that the webmaster of the site is pregnant and recruiting readers to write articles for the site during this time... maybe you could submit something about the mintpad/mintpad2 and gain some publicity for mintpass (and dapreview) (and you) in the process! You'd be a celebrity there... the last mintpad mention garnered 37 comments.

And thank you nywytboy68. I'm just so happy that something has finally materialized with a Zii chip. On this site and epizenter I have variously pushed the idea of a Ziintpad, a Ziiune, an Asus Ziieee PC, a Nokziia, a Sony Ericzen (hmm maybe just SonZii?) and a RIM Blackberrzii, among other ideas.

Zip, I don't think the Zii isn't very special on account of comparing it to the next-greatest advance in SoCs. It's like saying Frasier wasn't that special, namely when compared to Ali. They're both titans in the field and are head and shoulders above most everyone else.

Both chips represent a major leap forward, combining significant computing and 2D processing power and minimal power consumption. Prior to them, most designs were strong in only one of those areas (if any). Based on the youtube clip I linked to earlier, a single Zii chip was driving 4 720p displays, or 1440x960 resolution. Are there any SoCs in use today in DAPs that can do anything close? The Tegra would seem to have similar abilities, so they're both really major achievements.

Which is better depends on what's being measured, but I believe the Zii is dual-core vs. single core for the Tegra and also has many more general-purpose processing elements (which may or may not be an advantage depending on how they stack up to the Tegra's). The Tegra may consume less power, but both chips are fantastic in that regard. The Zii has also been demonstrated to have major scalability (the demo where a zillion ziis were hooked up together and doing real-time ray-tracing). In this clip a Zii demo shows the Zii using two video ports to drive two different screens simultaneously, cycling through photos on one while playing HD video on the other. Again, that type of multitasking ability has not been present on DAPs up to now. Think about this... imagine being able to hook up two different screens and let two people on a car/plane trip watch different movies at the same time from one device! I don't know if the Zii DAP will have more than one HDMI port, but at least it's possible. Actually, I'll have to add that feature to the spec list of my dreap DAP configuration...

maybe no one responds after your posts because they are so long and rambling. i'm not saying the zii is bad, but your praise of it leaves its competition out of the picture. i'm guessing hdmi will be left to a dock like the zunehd, but we'll see.

There's no chance there's a HDMI port on the device, or at least not a standard HDMI one. It's a lot more likely to be a miniaturized version.

The size of such a port isn't that important, it's presence would be. I suspect they will wimp out of fitting one though

Pondlife, the FCC test report on pages 8-12 show a test for EMI from HDMI, and there's even a mention that the device was tested with a Sony Bravia 32" TV, if I recall correctly. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think they'd change something like that after the FCC certification. That and the fact the chip demos used HDMI to connect to monitors gives me confidence.

nywytboy68: You betcha! Bring some wading boots and grizzly bear repellent, though.

"Are you sure, since were both married, no one would get jealous." - planning on doing some "hiking along the Appalachian Trail", are we?

Once the Zii is released....

* Anythingbutipod.com will become Nothingbutzii.com.

* At a White House press conference, President Obama will announce he's trading in his Ipod for a Zii, declaring "Now this is a stimulus package!"

* Vice-president Biden will declare the Zii "Too cool to fail!"

* Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be pissed that she doesn't get a cool slogan to say.

* Senator McCain will get mavericky and endorse the Zune HD, declaring its font size easiest on his eyes.
