Sony E440 series Announced
comment: 23 | Tuesday, July 14 (2009) 07:23PM | Posted by Michael

We here at dapreview have become rather spoiled by the steady stream of touchscreen players coming out lately. It seems like most companies have all but abandoned the once dominant tactile control for a more fingers-on approach. Today, Sony refreshed our memories with their newest Walkman, the E440 series. Like last year's E340 series, the E440 has a circular D-pad and matching menu buttons. A configuration that many here have coined the "Mickey Mouse" control scheme. The new Walkman is 9.3mm's thin, and comes in two colors, a solid black one, and a striking two-tone red and black model. Besides the new looks, not much has changed under the hood from previous generations.

Features

  • Capacity: 4, 8, and 16GB
  • Display: 2.0" LCD (320 x 240)
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, and AAC
  • Video: MPEG-4 SP, WMV, and H.264
  • FM Tuner and recorder
  • Battery life: 30 hours for Audio, 6 hours for video

According to Sony Europe, the players will start shipping later this month. A US release will inevitably follow.

So, how many times are sony going to repackage the same player? really, they must have 8 models that are all the same but with different shells, kinda grinds my gears.

Yeah. I like the look of it, but they need to do something different. Maybe change up the interface, add an accelerometer, add bluetooth, etc..

Love the styling and the red is gorgeous. I don't need one and won't get one mind you lol. Well not for myself at least.

I think I've said before look back at how many almost entirely identical cassette walkmans they used to have back in the day. When I worked in a shop I think there were more than 30 at one point

On the up side, if you bought an A818 two years ago and still have it you wont be compelled in any way to buy one of these "new" sony players...I do love the A818, fantastic little DAP.

Sony and Sammy are flooding the pmp market with unnecessary new players. When I think that the Sammy guys are somewhat satisfied with the P3, they are announcing to release a couple of new pmp, all of which doesn't look like new at all.

Samsung isn't supporting the P3 the way they should, especially since it's such a fantastic player. Sony,..... meh!!! Give me an S639 w/32gb of flash & I'd RMA the S9 like yesterday!!! For me it's the PERFECT DAP!!!!

Sony has a rule (even though it's not said straight out): They never give feature updates, only bug fixes. Sux really, but that's how they roll.

Darn them, they should have AT LEAST put an OLED in this to make it worth an upgrade.
Still, I LOVE these Sony's and if I got a good deal on one I might bite.

Can't think of any features mine lack as music players. Although gapless would be a nice improvement

i'll say this over and over: Give me a 32gb S63X series player, and it'll be the PERFECT PLAYER!!! And, the SenseMe playlist generator isn't all that bad either.

Ah pondy I think a lot of people would like that feature...you wouldn't even have to sit there and programme your playlist, just the ability to line up a song after the one you're playing, or an album to play after the album you are listening to finishes. I'm actually amazed sony haven't added such features yet!shocking really

Sony lives in the feudal era, and since they feel their the top shogun, they do as they please. It's a shame really, as they have the ability to be numero uno, but screw it up all the time by being both stubborn & ignorant - that's quite an amazing feat!!!

At least they're putting out stuff with tactile controls. I fear that in not too long tactile will be out for all but budget players...even touchscreens with nice UIs don't work as well for me as straightforward tactile controls.

This series' design looks similar like my phone. I wish they would add FLAC to their players.
