Creative now shipping the Zii EGG, Initial Impressions are in!

Creative has just started shipping out the first batch of Zii EGG orders. Staff member, DaHarder was lucky enough to be among them, and has posted a few pictures of the touchscreen device. The EGG is a Developer's model so it's still a bit of a work in progress. Still, from what I've seen of the interface, a consumer model may not be too far off. Here are DaHarder's first impressions of the player:

"The screen on the Zii EGG compares very favorably with the Sony's OLED (shown above), though the blacks certainly aren't as intense. It's shockingly bright, and colors are very vibrant and 'alive'. The built-in speakers are about on par with those on my Zen X-Fi, though not quite as good as the one's on my Sony NWZ-S545 (also pictured) - IMO."

"Remember that the Zii EGG/DE is not a retail/consumer product and is very 'rough around the edges', but one thing that I'm really happy about is that the player sounds better than ANY Creative DAP/PMP since the Zen MicroPhoto. I'll even go so far as to say that it's the best sounding Creative player I've ever heard, and that's without any EQ/Z-Fi etc."

So there you have it. This might be Creative's best sounding player to date, and this comes from someone who probably has every Creative player to date so I'll take his word on it. Stay tuned for more hands-on impressions. I'd also like to take this time to give DaHarder a warm welcome back after being gone for a few months with an illness.

A few hands-on videos also showed up on youtube, which you can check out after the jump....

nice! I feel like the industry is recovering from the drought since what i thought to be the "golden age" when the vision m, clix, A2, and others were out

I agree that this is shaping up to be a very good period for DAP/PMP development.

The Sony X-Series, the Zune HD, the Zii EGG (endless potential), and Oh! Those new Apple iCamPods.

Man! I can't wait until Zii EGG (get it?) filnally gets Android... It's going to be SICK!

does it only take a minute to start up the first time? or is that just how it is?

This firmware is a very early beta version, so the load times are somewhat lengthy... of course that'll all change with the release of Zii Android, and subsequent Plaszma versions.

DaHarder, how is the feel of Plaszma? Like, do you think that it is a limited/crippled OS and that Android will certainly be far superior, or do you feel that Plaszma can hold its own?

Is the files on the SD card integrated or is it like other creative devices where it is not?

Saijin - Plaszma is still in its infancy, so there's little to really judge, though admittedly I'm really eager to see what Android does on this puppy (So n ice to have options).

Bloody - SD/SDHC integration has not been activated yet, so we'll see how that pans out...

Still, slow boot time aside, this is starting to be a killer DAP.

Again I want it but with everything converging this needs to also be a cellphone for me to really look at it. Any where I can get more info on the Plaszma os?

I'll be sharing details of each update as they are released... Especially those regarding Plaszma and Android.

Throw Android on there and I'll probably buy 1, but only after they give the update for full sdHC integration. Then, there's really no excuse NOT to like the Zii IMO.
