Someone tries to scratch the Zune HD...Fails miserably
comment: 17 | Wednesday, October 21 (2009) 01:17PM | Posted by Michael
We've all seen plenty of videos of iPods being intentionally scratched, stepped on, and whatever else these dap sadists can think of . We've even seen someone giving the Cowon S9 a once over with a variety of metal utensils. It's like some sort of sick initiation ritual that all touchscreen players have to go through. Now it's the Zune HD's turn. The poor little player was subjected to coins, keys, various pens, and one giant knife. The end result? Well see for yourself:

I'm impressed! the Zune HD appears to have come out relatively unscathed. For those that picked one up, how's yours holding up?

I've had mine for sometime now and it looks almost like new.
My dirty fingers on the screen though are noticeable

scratch resistent glass & plastic has been around for decades, so it's good to know they are actually investing in better materials or the materials finally got cheaper to produce. in the end, it's a good business decision if alot of players were coming back under warranty/extended warranty for screen cover swapouts. hopefully this will catch on with the other companies in their fab process.

now, if they could make a dvd+-r recordable disc that could have the same properties with a Zero total pie/pif error count, based upon this innovation, i'd really be impressed!

1) The image in the video is far too blurry to notice any actual scratches
2) The amount of force/pressue and angle of a sharp object puts onto the screen will be a factor

But it does look promising.

I cheated and placed a matte-finished screen protector on mine, so it's still looks as handsome as ever

undesign the description also says: "Trying to scratch the Zune HD's screen with a variety of tools to no avail."

So unless that person is lying for whatever reason, the screen probably didn't get scratched much at all.

@undesign: I do agree about the apparent lack of any pressure.
Also anyone who attempted to scratch a CD knows that it is surprisingly hard to do.

While I agree that the video quality (mostly framerate actually) is rather poor, any scratches would most likely have made themselves evident in the video.

I believe that the forces that the Zune was not up to par with the merciless beating that the Cowon S9 survived..

That said, pretty rugged, but I dont know if it was under the same conditions as the S9 was put under, whether or not the Zune HD would survive without so much as a scratch.

Hey 34.50, is that YOUR Zune that was put to the test???
edit: nevermind, it seems illogical for you to try to cause harm to any DAP.

And about the clarity of video: The video may not be 1080p quality, but it is definitely clear enough to discern that NO scratches were formed by the test.

I can't see the point of it unless they can make the rest of the device flexible as well - otherwise it's just a very expensive way of making the screen impervious to damage that would end up damaging another part of the player/phone/whatever instead.

I would say cracked screens is the main course of damage gadgets.

So an unbreakable screen seems logical to me.

@ stepp666: because the screen is so flexible, it can take all sorts of potential damage.

But a fully flexible device would be amazing. Imagine a DAP that just stuck to the arm of your ski jacket. ...a quarterback could have a screen around his forearm, networked to a computer with all of the plays. Imagine military applications. Cool stuff. Oh, and that Zune HD looks nice. lol

Forget it, it's not worth trying to spell it out.

"Imagine the military applications." Are you serious? You consider that cool? As a species, we should be finding ways NOT to kill each other.

@ Step666: Sorry , I understand where you're coming from now. I should try reading next time.

@kahn: I appreciate your idealism, but lets be real. A world without conflict would be great, but the fact is -nations war with each other. They always have and they always will. Arms races and new technologies are all part of the game. And yes, I think weapons and military gear is cool, so what? Get off your high horse.
