Sony X1000 series finally comes down in price [Updated]

The Sony X1000 was looking mighty fine to us, leading up to its release. We drooled over its OLED screen, sexy design, and slick interface. Once we found out about its weak video capabilities, and its formidable pricing, the love affair was all but over. To make things worse, both the iPod touch (3g) and Zune HD came out with significantly lower price points than the X1000. Every so often often I'd check in on Sony to see if the X1000 would drop in price, but sadly, they weren't budging. The other night I visited Sony Style, and to my surprise, the 32GB model was down to $299. The 16GB is was still at 299, but there is hope. Newegg has just started selling he 16GB model for $199. Official or not, it's about time this player dropped in price. Now if only Sony could convince us to care about it again.

Also for a limited time, you can get 10% off the 32GB and other Walkman players at Sony Style, plus 100 free songs to download.

Update: Okay there's some strange pricing issues going on. Newegg's price for the 16GB is back up to $299 within hours of writing this, and at Sony Style the 16GB is actually selling for $399 now, $100 more than its retail price. I have no idea what's going on here. I'll try and contact Sony for some clarification.

Anddd now Newegg is showing $299 again. Now I'm wondering if it was just a sale, or whether this is a sign of a price drop. It can't be just a coincidence that both dropped all of a sudden can it

As an owner of a 32gb X1K, I can say (without reservation) that sound quality of this calibre is worth the US 399.99 asking price, though I do understand that such pricing appears less-than-competitive in these tight economic times.

I already ordered the 64gb Touch, so it's too late for me.

I'd imagine Sony are trying to shift stock before replacing it in Feb/mar...logically assuming that's when it'll be replaced...then again who knows for sure with the price hopping all over the place like that

I saw the price drop a few days ago on the canadian sonystyle website, the 32gb went down from $499 to $449. Now I don't see the player on the site at all, it got taken down. Even if the new price is $449, thats still way too much. The Cowon S9 costs $279 CAD from Newegg.ca and offers heaps more, and also has 32gb of space.

I can't believe how sony consistently proves to screw everything up even when it finally does something right. They put out an awesome player and put an insane price tag on it. $500 dollars?!? I really want to know who the idiot at sony agreed to that price.

^nope, theyre lower, the X1000 came back online today Click Here

$450 for a 32gb mp3 player with less features than most others? Its no wonder why I havent given my money to sony for the X1000, if it was $300, i'd reconsider, and then thats maybe, as the Cowon S9 is still cheaper and offers a LOT more.
