CES 2010: Cowon W2, Intel Atom-powered MID revealed
comment: 9 | Friday, January 08 (2010) 12:47AM | Posted by Michael

I decided to check out Cowon's site tonight and guess what I saw? Well, besides the barrage of pop-ups (seriously Cowon?), they've put up a teaser page for the Cowon W2. A few months back, we reported on the W2, which was outed by some Bluetooth certification documents. It's a MID device, which is what everyone seems to be making these days. The W2 has a really clean brushed metal design, and is being powered by an Intel Atom processor. They haven't provided the full specs yet, but here's what we have so far:

W2 Features

  • Display: 4.8" Touchscreen LCD (1024 x 600 resolution)
  • Powered by: Intel Atom 1.33GHZ CPU
  • Runs: Windows 7
  • Built-in: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Speakers
  • Connections: USB/USB-mini, Ethernet Port/Monitor Out (via cable)
  • Component/Composite Out (via cable)

Yeah, like I said, not much to really go on so far. We'll update you as soon as we find out more.

Blimey same resolution as most netbooks on a screen that size. Hmmm

Pintrail Atom cpu would have been better for battery life. On a plus note with the right codec/software you should be able to do 720p fine with the intel gma500, and pair that with Cowon's usually good sound quality it should be an above average device.

Not that it could show 720p on the screen anyway

Well it does have composite out, and some people just want to be able to play that file without converting it so I guess it could work for them. But, sadly even with flash 10.1 youtube HD won't work well and neither would Hulu.

I wonder how (bad or good) the battery life will be? Plus, this is gonna choke while using it - too slow anyone?

I dunno for the stuff I have seen with the Vaio P and the 1.3ghz Atom it wasn't that bad, specially when paired with the SSD.

I guess we'll have to wait till it's released for a full hand's on review. All we have is speculation atm.

I like the looks, but I'm hoping it doesn't weigh near 1 pound like the Q5W did. Always was worried about my pants dropping when I had it in my pocket.
