Spotted online: the Archos Gmini XS200

The Archos Gmini series has just welcomed a new member: the 200XS. Ha! We knew about this device, but well... can't ignore those non-disclosure agreements. Luckily enough for us, some webshop has placed an item on the XS200 on their site. We've spotted it on this Italian WEBSITE, which offers the tiny little player next to other, already well-known Archos products. Now, what you'd like to see are the specs, right? Ok:
  • Capacity: 20GB1 Hard Disk – Up to 300 hours* of music
  • Interfaces: USB 2.0 high-speed
  • Music playback: Stereo MP3 decoding @ 30-320 kb/s CBR & VBR, WMA and WAV (PCM)
  • Display: 2” level gray scale LCD, 128x128 pixels. 9 lines of characters
  • Playback Autonomy: Up to 10 hours
  • Power source: Internal: Rechargeable Li-Ion Batteries. External: AC charger/adaptor
  • Dimensions: Approx. 76.5 x 59 x 19.5 mm / 2.9" x 2.3" x 0.75”
  • Weight: 120 g (4.30 oz)
  • Package includes: Gmini XS200, USB 2.0 cable, AC power charger adaptor, headphones, quickstart guide (in-depth manual on Gmini XS200 HD)
Ok, so what we've got here is an ultra-portable, lightweight and very simplified DAP. Ehr... something kind of iPod-like, you could say (no, please don't kill me for this statement). You see.... compare the dimensions to that of say, iPod v4: 76.5 x 59 x 19.5mm (200XS) vs 103,5 x 61,8 x 14,6mm. 120 grams? That's only 17 grams more than iPod Mini, for instance. Both units are audio-only, no fancy color screen line-in-destroy-the-world blahblah to be spotted.

The European SRP will be 299 Euro for the Gmini XS - not bad compared to the 329 Euro for iPod v4 (Holland). Guess Archos' unit will be somewhat less-refined, material-wise, but this device does look promising enough to me.

Update: the XS will come available early October. Suggested retail price for the United States will be $249, making it equally expensive as e.g. the iPod Mini.

Also note that Archos has already set up a TEMPLATE PAGE for the XS (tech specs HERE). No new pics yet, but this is nice to read:

"The Double Browser is an easy-to-use music file management system organizing your files. This unique management functionality allows you to delete, rename, copy, move files and even create folders directly on the Gmini XS200 without using a computer. "

um it looks quite plain imo. that gui also looks inneficient. instead of balck and white icons you can have like 8 options (currently only 4). just a preference i suppose

Its going to be quite a solid player.

The reason archos's players have crappy battery life is that they are going the ipod route by squeezing everything into a very small package. That, of course, comes at the expense of another battery/bigger battery.

Well, battery life aint too great... design isn't really impressive either *except* for the dimensions. Take a look at what this thing will look like, compared to - let's keep this story consistent - the iPod v4 and iPod Mini.

Plus, that 10 hours of battery life is the missing link between the Mini (8 hours) and the V4 (12 hours) . Price is pretty darn competitive for a 20GB device, especially given the compactness of it all.

plus, to be fair, depths compared (v4 & XS):

I don't know if it's going to be vaporware but the Auvi player is pretty compact too and it boasts a 20 hour battery life.

3.8” x 2.4” x 0.5” / 96mm x 60mm x 13.1mm
4.1 oz / 116 g

Eliminating CF Drive Slot????????????????
This was a major selling point. A cheap hard drive for photos. I can't believe they'd eliminate that.

why not? The Gmini220 already has that, and it's small enough. The XS is just mean as a very compact audio-only no-nonsense thing - it's a bit cheaper than the Gmini220 as well (299 Euro for the XS vs 399 Euro for the 220, suggested retail price of course).

CF Drive Slot

Will they keep selling the Gmini 220? I really wonder if they are trying to push people up to their next higher model, since that one displays photos well (as opposed to the Gmini 220).

But the basic task of the Gmini 220 with respect to data storage is just that - storage. Dump from the CF drive, and then dump to computer next time you are home.

Also, I bought the Gmini 220 a few months ago, and it was already down to $249. I imagine it's cheaper than that now.

afaik the 220 will remain availble for the coming months... Archos is just extending their range of gmini and AV-products. Take their Studio/Recorder players for instance, still available in some stores.

can't recall saying I liked it. Never tested it. It's just one of the models that holds the Gmini-concept together.

I rather like it (except for batt. life and lack of Ogg Vorbis support).
