GigaBeat F10/20/60 range announced: first 1.8" 60GB DAP won't be an iPod?

Wow, pretty much out of the blue for us, this new GigaBeat from Toshiba. Let's see what they've got to offer this time.
  • 1.8" HDD with 10, 20 or 60GB capacity (F10/20/60)
  • Supports MP3, WMA & WAV (+DRM WMP)
  • 2.2 Type QVGA color TFT lcd (240×320 resolution, 32,768 colors max)
  • USB2.0
  • Built-in lithium ion battery, 11 hours of playback time per charge
  • 29 Equalizer settings, including user equalizer
  • 106 x 63 x 16mm (F10/F20)
    106 x 63 x 19mm (F60)
  • Comes with gigabeatRoom + RipRec application for transferring music
  • 160 grams (F10/20)
    170 grams (F60)
  • Available in white, blue, pink (argh) and silver (F60: silver-only)
  • F60 comes with cradle, which is optional for the F10 & 20

Ok, so what we have here is another attempt by Toshiba to outsmart the iPod. The F-series is compact (106 x 63 x 19 mm for the F60 vs 104 x 61 x 18 mm for the Apple iPod v4, 40GB), actually weighs a tad less than the 40GB pod, comes with a 2.2" color screen and has 20GB of additional space to offer.

Here's the catch: the suggested retail prices are completely insane. The F10/20 will cost about $350-$450, which is kind of steep for those capacities. The F60 comes with a price tag that's mentioning a staggering $575 or more! Now, that's *not* the way to get our attention.

The F-series will go on sale as of late November (F10/20) / early December (F60) and there's no indication on whether it'll make it to the outside-Japan-world this time, or not.

The unit it self is ...ehr.. well.... bearable to say the most, but the docks kills all remaining sexappeal with a fatal blow to ergonomics.

I wonder how that cross-like control thing will find a use, doesn't seem too comfortable for our big Western hands and all.

Lone is rite, that thing is TOTALLY aimed at japanese kids. I highly doubt that thing will ever see an official release outside Japan. However, it does mean likely that the G-series gigas will be dropping in price over there and i have a source to get say a G22 for about 360 USD!!! I have been holding out but i think i am going to be gettin one of those older mofo in a few months.

True, not that bad. Not particularly good either, but at least it comes with a cool color screen. i wish it would play movies though, seems kinda pointless this way. Ow and the 60GB is hella expensive of course

According to PC World: "The players support either MP3, Windows Media Audio, or WAV files, although the files have to be passed through Toshiba's "Gigabeat Room" software to be loaded onto the device and recognized by the player. This process results in the files being encrypted and is an anti-piracy measure, says Suzuki. If music files can be dragged and dropped onto the Gigabeat's hard drive without using the software the device won't recognize them." This is very bad news for what could or should have been a great DAP.

Was to be expected, they always do that. Remember the first GigaBeat? Don't? Well, that's one of the reason you don't, the media transfer stuff was limited back then as well. Three letters for them: MSC. All it needs. Three letters anyone can do without: DRM.

Simple arithmetic:
400 USD divided by 40 GB = 10 USD/GB [iPod 40GB]
300 USD divided by 20 GB = 15 USD/GB [iPod 20GB]
575 USD divided by 60 GB = 9.58 USD/GB [Toshiba 60GB]
600 USD divided by 60 GB = 10 USD [equivalent 60GB iPod]

It’s cheaper than an iPod of comparable capacity. If it were released in the United States the price would probably be adjusted (think $549); the Japanese approach to marketing is different.
