Soon-to-be-released: Cowon iAudio M5
comment: 2 | Sunday, December 12 (2004) 10:24AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
A few more details have surfaced for Cowon iAudio\'s M5:

• Chip set: Motorola/Freescale ColdFire SCF5249
• 20GB, 1.8-inch HD
• USB 2.0, Mass Storage Complient
• USB on-the-go (USB Host function)
• Color LCD display
• Supports FLAC, OGG, WMA, MP3, ASF & WAV
• Support Limited video rendition
• Radio
• Voice Record
• View text files & pictures
• Line-in recording
• Includes in-line remote

Still, some major questions remain unanswered. Will the remote feature an LCD, like the M3? Will the \"limited\" video support be something like the 10fps implementation on the iRiver H300? What is the LCD resolution and color depth? etc etc. We will know soon enough as the M5 could be available as early as this month. At the latest, Cowon should have it on display at CES 2005 (Jan. 6 through 9) - and we\'ll be there to get the scoop.

Yes it looks huge but in reality the size should be no bigger than the M3L. The thing I really want to know is the batter-life. I have heard specualtions of 14-30hrs, but we will have to wait and see.

iRiver's H300 series are just as thick if not thicker.

USB on the go
Smaller Size (Should be about 18mm thick, compared to the Irivers 21-23mm)
Service and Support (Iaudio continually updates their firmware and gives what it promises)
It will most likely be lighter than the Iriver aswell.

In the left hand marging of this site, http://www.suntecint.com/, they say that a 40GB M5 is "coming soon."

This is great news. I am assuming the 40GB version will be slightly larger. Maybe it will just be a uniform thickness. If so, I will be the first to order!

I agree with the thoughts on the hump. I am sure I can live it though.

Also I didn't know that you could still use USB OTG with the Iriver. Thats interesting that they said it is not available on the US models.

[Linky]

That forum thread is dedicated to this issue. It seems like it may work with the right cable and the right devices, but it still does not officially support USBOTG.

Glad to see that iPod has not enslaved (duped) 100% of earths population as yet. I just want to say iPod is pretty but funtionally inept, inferior and expensive. I have an iRiver flash player it it has more features out of the box than an ipod. Anyway t the point.
I have been scouring the net looking for demensions for th M5 iAudio and came up with zilch, nadda, zero info. We need to draw a comparison. when I say the iRiver H3xx I thought it was huge in comparison to an ipod. But it took to get use to. So guys, goal number one: Find out the size of the M5 before we go crazy worrying about the hump. Pictures can decieve, it might be thiner than we think.

Someting else audiophiles of the dap forum. Anyone know about compatiblity with music stores? For sure, iTunes is out, but wha of the rest? I can see ipod going the way of the dinosour if competitors continue churning out solid, high quality daps. Also, soon (as the RIAA would want) pay service might just be the only way to downloa music.

I'll say it again and again: The base dimensions of the M5 are exactly the same as the M3. We just don't know how thick it is.
My guess is that it is exactly as thick as the normal M3 at the bottom and as thick as the M3L at the top.

Oh well no knows for sure based on any factual information. So lets wait and see. If iAudio really knows whats best for them they would not make us wait till spring or summer. I need a DAP before that.
Rock on dudes!
Fight the machine.
