Sneak Peek at the Neuros 3, aka PocketPlayer
comment: 8 | Monday, January 24 (2005) 09:19AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
A few weeks ago we reported about the next-generation player from Neuros, the PocketPlayer. Now that I'm finally getting around to scanning in these flyers from CES, I have this one picture to share. It's not much, but gives you some idea of what to expect. We havn't seen the actual player yet either. Should be another 6 months or so before it's ready, according to the rep.

So, what about the design? It does seem a little plain although the final product will cerainly look better than it appears here. What makes this player interesting is the long list of features, even though it's roughly the same size as other mini-players. The PocketPlayer does pretty much everything you could want (except perhaps, video recording). And like they've done with the old Nueros, the firmware will be open-source.

Details:
• 5gb, 1-inch HD
• 1.8-inch 65k color LCD (160x128 pixel)
• USB 2.0, USB 1.1 Host
• MPEG4 Video playback (10fps)
• JPEG picture view
• FM radio, time-set radio recording
• Voice Recording
• Supports MP3, WMA (+DRM), AAC, OGG, WAV
• Drag-n-drop music loading
• Charge from USB
• Playback up to 10 hours
• 89 x 58 x 18mm, 110g

Nueros: Hope you don't mind, no one asked us to keep this stuff under wraps.

I thought one of the reasons that the Neuros 2 code was released was because they claimed it was good for EOL products, this clearly isn't EOL since its not even been released yet, are they planning to go open source from the start now? Hope so, its an excellent idea, I'd be extremely interested in getting a normal size and capacity player, I'm not interested in a mini player and the Neuros 2 is a teeny bit chunky, still I'll be interested to see what they produce if they go for a higher capacity player.

fluidity.

i hope it's not as big/thick as it looks on that picture..

what does voice recording mean? no line/mic in? they should include a mic in..

The problem with the video support and audio recording features is they really don't fit on a 5 gig HD.

You guys catch everything! In any case, this is not actually the Neuros III, which will be a larger capacity model. The PocketPlayer is a mini sized player. Regarding open source, I'll clarify that shortly, but suffice it to say that it's always our desire to have as much code publically released as soon as possible. It's not always easy because there are so many partners involved contributing code, etc.

hey its the neuros project manager, congrats. Regarding the neuros and how much I look forward to the new players.

The origional neuros was great, and the only reason I switched from a neuros to the iriver h120 was because my unit just stopped working one day.

It says it will support AAC. Have you received authority from Apple to play their AAC or is this for unprotected AAC files?

They're obviously unprotected. Apple would never allow another company to use fairplay.(well except maybe motorola )
