iriver Clix 2 GB - What we know/don't know

Of those who have voiced complaints about iriver's dimunitive U10 audio player, they've mostly been of the same variety.

"Only 1 GB? Where will I store my music/movies/porn/vacation photos?"

"Over $ 200? It needs at least 2 GB of flash storage for that price."

Well, these cries may have been heard by the folks at iriver. Showing up on a few online webshops (and in this forum thread) is something called the iriver Clix (AKA CXW-2G).

What's there to say about it? Well, from one of the online retailers, the following specs are listed:

  • 2.2" color display
  • 28 hours of battery life
  • PlaysForSure and subscription support
  • MP3/WMA/OGG playback
  • Also shows photos and video (15 fps MPEG4)

Hmm...yeah, looks like the U10 spec-wise. And the "Clix" name certainly fits considering the U10's clicky buttons surrounding the screen. So is this just a name change + capacity bump?

Well, one of our members has an inside peek at the Clix:

As I said in an earlier post, nothing all that new, but it's a serious evolutionary improvement. It's basically a U10 on the outside with some special sauce on the inside.

...1. This product was designed from the ground up...from advertising, to packaging, to the UI, to the price, to the chipset, to the PC software experience, etc.
2. I can say with no hesitation that the UI and performance of the device are the best I've ever experienced for this generation of players.
3. It also works really well with the upcoming MTV Urge music service and Windows Media Player 11 (as well as the new Explorer-like functionality that comes with WMP11).

I'm normally not a fan of "special sauce", but in this case I may be willing to accept it. Especially if it's some sort of mix of oregano and gapless playback. We'll be on the lookout for sure.

Note: There are supposedly 2 GB U10's available in parts of Europe and Korea, but nowhere else, yet.
